The S&W 5904 is a fine gun. S&W was the industry leader in development of high capacity 9mm pistols; unfortunately, most police depts decided after a short time that the round was not powerful enough, and many switched to .40 cal autos. Police trade-ins have been widely available for the last 20 years at relatively low prices. So, there's just not interest in them, but, for those on a budget, they are a good value.
Colt and S&W no longer feel the need to maintain replacement parts for their older guns, so you may have a difficult time finding what you need. I have no idea why the small parts won't take bluing.
