I'm looking for someone who has experience with the Springfield Armory XD handgun. My question is I'm looking to buy for target shooting and home protection. Am I better off with the 9mm or 40 and a 4 inch barrel vs 5inch barrel? Also if you have shot the V10 model with port holes what did you think? Thank you

9mm ammo is cheaper, but a LEO friend of mine tells me that the 40 cal penetrates sheet metal as in cars better than the 9 mm. I would think that the longer length better may reduce recoil, but at the same time it would be harder to conceal.

From what I've found, the sheet metal bodies on cars won't stop a bullet for nothing. I shot a totalled yugo that a bud had behind his house with a 22. Went clean thru it, all over the place. A car isn't good for cover at all, only concealment. It wouldn't matter if you got the 9 or 40, either way you could still go clean thru one door and out the other.

Personally I like the 40 cause its a bigger bullet which leaves a bigger hole.
