Brass Framed Revolvers

Does any body know if brass framed black powder revolver were designed as shooters or wallhangers ? I bought a .44 cal brass framed
blackpowder gun a sombody told me that it should not be used for shooting ! They said you can shoot it but after 20 or so shots the brass streaches out and the barrel becomes misaligned.Is all this true
or can I use it with light loads ?

  They can be shot. In my experience it takes more than 20 shots though. You don't have to load it with max loads. It will last alot longer with light loads. Actually what happens, the frame stretches and the hand isn't able to bring the cylinder all the way into lock up. Sometimes a good gunsmith can tighten them back up if you don't let them go too far before fixing it.

  I have a replica Colt style .36 Navy BP revolver that I got in about 1960. I used to load it rather hot and the only thing I noticed was that the frame screws loosened up after a couple dozen shots. I hunted and killed a couple javelina at the time. The brass frame has two steel alinement pins that line up with the barrel assembly. I understand that if you continue to shoot too many hot loads in these guns that the holes become elongated. I have not had that problem. My gun shoots the same as it did 40 years ago.

  Never had any problem with my brass "navy". Look at the mechanics of the revolver. There is actually little tension on the frame from firing it.
  Most of the stories you hear are from people who "heard about a problem". You will never hear this fairy tale from someone who used the revolver himself!

  BULL!....THE CONFEDERATES HAD NO PROBLEMS SHOOTING THEM.....I'VE BEEN SHOOTING MY 36CAL BRASS FRAME NAVY PISTOL OF AND ON SENSE 1965.....YOU MIGHT HAVE PROBLEMS SHOOTING A BRASS FRAME 44CAL BECAUSE IT HAS A LARGER CHAMBER CAPICITY IF YOU MAX LOAD.....WISH YOU A WHOLE BUNCH OF LUCK.....JOHN.....

  All the brass framed replica revolvers can be fired. They are perfectly safe as long as they are in good condition and NOT overloaded. All that is nessesary is common sense on loads and maintenance. Keep it clean, lubricated, and don't overload it. You should enjoy years of fun shooting. By the way, Some examples I have repaired, These were of the bottom end in price, have had a problem with the cylinder pin loosening in the frame. I made new ones for them and threaded them into the frame, original was pinned, aside this they are fun to shoot.
