Will 483l, 4350 and H414 bend the op rod in a M1A like it will in the M1Garand?

  In time, yes it will. While the M14/A1 operating rod is a little different from that in the M1 Garand, you still have the same problem of the larger area under the burning curve of the slower powders which keeps pressure higher for a longer time and raises the gas port pressure by several thousand pounds over design limits. Both the M14/A1 and the Garand were designed around cartridges useing powder with a burning rate similar to that of IMR-4895. In some rifles such as the FN-FAL and it's clones and the Ljungman and it's clones there is better control of excessive gas prussure by useing a gas regulator with several different size holes so that larger or smaller amounts of gas can be vented to atmosphere. The trick is to know where to set the regulator in order to have the weapon function without causeing undo stress on it. Hope that this is of some help to you.

  Thanks SCOUT, I knew it was bad on a M1, but wasn't sure on my M-14. Guess I'LL just break down and buy some 748 or BLc2, all I have on hand is 4831, H414 and 4350. thanks

  I suspect that a very light load, signigicaly smaller than a start load, with a magnum primer would work but why try?
  
  Similarly, a lab could work out safe loads with these powders but you as an individual probably wouln't have access to such equipment.
  
  Finally, there are (for Garands and perhaps M1As) differeing gas plugs for the end of the gas tube to regulate pressure that would probably allow you to use the powders in question.

  I've had excellent luck for a wide range of bullets using both Win748 and IMR4895 powders in my M1A. They are both excellent, and I would highly recommend them.

  Please do not try small amounts of slow burning powder with magnum primers! You could wind up with an uncontroled explosion that will take your rifle apart.
