rear sight

is there any reason for a smoothbore musket to have a rear sight? I have what i think is a US model 1816 musket but the barrel has a dovetail for a rear sight. The barrel is shorter but it could have been shortened when they sporterized it. It does not have proof marks. it is the right size though for this gun. It seems to me that it could have been a rifle and the converted it. any ideas?

  I have a Schultz Larsen rifle in .22lr and I am missing the rear sight.Any of you happen to what kind of sight it might be or happen to have one?
