Hi cap mags
I had a "spirited discussion" (argument) with a buddy last night about pre ban high capacity mags. He claims that it is illegal to put a hi-cap in a post ban gun - I disagree. Who is right? This may seem like a dumb question, but it is really bugging me. Thanks for your input. Shoot straight!

I am going out of the country soon to places where hi cap mags are legal. If I was to purchase one or two for personal use and bring it home with me would that be legal?

Legal so far.
Probably change in Sept 2004.

It is legal, it is illegal however to modify a post ban mag to accept more than 10 rounds. 0 -
In most cases you are correct, you can put a high capacity magazine in a post ban firearm. There are a few exceptions and the main one are certain semiautomatic rifles which were allowed to be imported after the Clinton executive order of 1998 banned the further importation of semiauto rifles which could accept a banned magazine. These rifles (mostly AK types) were modified to prevent them from accepting high capacity magazines by narrowing the magazine well opening and forcing them to use a single stack magazine. You are not allowed to simply open up the magazine well, to do this you would have to exchange enough parts to make the rifle US parts compliant. If you are simply talking about putting a 20 round magazine into a Bushmaster you bought last week, you would have no problem.
