Colt Police Positive
The local pawn shop has recently added 4 Colt Police Positive revolvers to their display case. All show a patent date of July 4, 1905. One in particular is chambered 38 S&W, with a 6" bbl., s/n 866xx. This gun is parkerized. Could that be original? And if so is it rare and how would it effect value. The finish is 95% plus.

I was visiting a lady in North Carolina and she showed me this revolver. It's a Police Positive in WRF. The serial # I believe is 32,3XX and the revolver is very tight, the blue's pretty fair and it seems to function O.K.
She got the gun and holster from her late uncle and knows nothing about it. I'm clueless about Colts, but would like to know the approximate age and value of this one. Also, is the WRF chambering less common? Any information would be appreciated. She's not interested in selling it. Thanks.

From talking to the guys who really collect guns, I know that even the best refinish ruins any value to them. This would still be a great little gun, but I don't think it would be worth a lot of money. I would guess $125-$200 but you never can tell what somebody might pay if they fall in love with it.

First of all, to the best of my knowledge, Colt never marked a Police Positive in "Caliber: 38 Short" so I am at a loss here as to what is marked......which leaves a little question in my mind initially on this gun.....Would need exact wording of markings to know what you have and a serial number to determine age.
Now, having said that, Colt Collectors in general do NOT seek out refinished guns.....because there are many "Original Finish" guns available, even though they may lack in finish. Your Gun was one of these before it was refinished.
As a Colt Collector myself, I would have NO interest in a refinished revolver as a "collectable." If I wanted an older Colt as a "shooter" I might purchase such a gun to shoot, but I would expect to purchase it at a much "reduced" price. A gun in very good mechanical condition with a nice "re-finish" might have more appeal, but not necessarily. I would much rather have a gun in excellent mechanical condition with a finish rated at 30% to shoot. Why? Well, I would be able to assign an "arbitrary" value which would closely approximate its value by research identical sold guns and pricing guides. With a "Re-Finished" gun, I would have to work harder to find those who would buy it and find out what they would pay to do so......and have a much smaller knowledge base to draw from
I think a fair answer to your question of a dollar estimate on your gun would be simply put, "That amount a ready, willing, and able buyer would pay for it." I know of no other way to determine its value. Hope this helps.

Manufactured in 1919, can shoot the .38 S. & W. Cartridge and the .38 Colt New Police Cartridge.
