advise on buying a .45 acp 1911 style
I am currently thinking about trading in my S & W 6906 9mm for a 1911 style .45 acp just for something different and for defense. My problem is, I've only been an avid shooter for a short time, and there are what seems like thousands of different manufacturers and models of the .45 acp 1911, and have a vast range in price. My question is, can I buy a .45 acp 1911 for approx. $700 or under and it be worth a damn. Will these guns at this price be reliable and accurate. If so what is the best gun for the money in this style. Also, will a 4" barrell compared to a 5" barrell in a .45 acp 1911 be much different in accuracy. If so how much. Thanks for any info provided.

The Springfield Armory 1911A1 Loaded is the way to go.It comes loaded like a custom gun would.It has a extended beavertail grip safety,combat speed trigger,skelentonized tactical hammer.And front and rear slide serrations.They also come with Novak adjustible sights.For the money its hard to beat.Good luck!

Any 1911 from Kimber, Colt, or Springfield will be a decent firearm.
In the price range you mentioned, there will be plenty of choices if you shop around.

I can't find fault with any of the above, and would just add not to overlook Para Ordnance. Also, Smith and Wesson is starting to produce the 1911, but I can't give you a report as mine hasn't arrived yet. If it's like their most recent revolvers it should be a good one. Personally, I'm heavily into Colts and Paras, and very satisified with both. 0 -
Kimber's base line gun that usually sells for $650 will have all the custom features you could want & is made in the USA. Same price range from Springfield will get you a gun that is made in Brazil. Colt at that price range will get you a stock gun in stainless.
Best buy with most custom features in my opinion is Kimber.

"...skelentonized tactical hammer..." A what? That a rounded hammer with a hole drilled through it? What makes it "tactical"? Is it camouflaged or just blackened? I'm just curious as to why you think this hammer is important. There seems to be a lot of firearm related stuff out these days that gets marketed as 'tactical'. The rounded hammer spur has been around for eons. It's only recently that it's been called 'tactical'. It used to be called a Commander hammer. It isn't new or tactical.
Accuracy isn't a function of barrel length. If a 4" feels better buy it.0 -
The Skeletonized hammer (standard on Kimber) was created to prevent hammer bite. With the creation of Beaver tail grip safeties (standard on Kimber), skeletonized hammers aren't needed as much anymore. Get a base line Colt that doesn't have either the special hammer or the beaver tail grip safety & you too can enjoy hammer bite.

If you want a nice .45 acp 1911 style pistol you can't possibly go wrong buying a Colt, Springfield, Kimber or Para-Ordnance 1911. They all shoot great out of the box with the basic models. Avoid Llama 0 -
I am partial to the COLT but that being said right now there seem to be some good deals on a 1911 that a lot of people are missing. The Dan Wesson Pointman Major or Seven Series.
These are American made using quality American components. If I am not mistaken the Major and Seven series have been discontinued for their new Patriot line. NO PROBLEM!! It is still made as a 70 Series Colt (minus the collett bushing) and ALL standard 1911 parts do interchange. Some good deals right now as it is a discontinued model.

You have been given alot of great advise. You can not go wrong with a 1911A1 pistal. Before you purchase one make shure you shoot one just like it. Then compare it to the Sig P220 in .45acp. Its like getting a second opinion. My 2 cents [8D]
