SKS k-mount
Hello all.
All I have is a hand drill. IS it realitic to drill a right angle hole in the reciever with a hand drill in order to install the above-mentioned mount. I learned the hard way that reciever cover scope mounts for SKS are crap.
I dont want to buy a drill press because I will only use it once.

I'd recommend having a smith do it for you ... or a machinist if you know one ... its nearly impossible to actually get the holes drilled straight and square ... you might get lucky with one but to just do it free hand I would expect disappointment ...
... experience is what you get usually just after you need it [B)]

What was the problem with the reciever cover scope mount??
I am in the process of choosing a scope and mount for my SKS.

The aftermarket receiver cover/scope mounts typically don't fit tight so they aren't much use as a sighting platform ... I've seen a couple that had the stock cut away and an AK side plate installed for the Quick Detach scope mounts but I don't know how well that worked out either ...

And another thing tony.
The receiver cover mount has to be taken off in order to clean the rifle, so you lose you zero and you have to sight in the gun all over again. So as you can see it is pretty much useless.0 -
I have had both receiver cover type/drilled and tapped type. As stated above the receiver cover has to come off for cleaning (of course I only clean my SKS if I have to - it ain't as finniky as my other rifles) and it is not a solid stationary platform unless you anchor it to the lower portion. I have my high mount anchored with 2 set screws on each side of the lower - this keeps it stationary but when I clean, I have to reset everything. I am only using an inexpensive BSA red dot, so it is not like I am doing major targets with it.
I would at least try to do what you want with a drill press and try to be as precise as you can when you place your punch marks. I think a decent smith would do it for cheap - but he would also tell you that you won't get any consistant accuracy. If your intended use is with-in 75yrds and a 75/30/20 round magazine and folding stock - then by all means do it. You will most likely be hitting a man sized target with it, but don't expect to be splitting hairs........just my opinion..... but they are fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Forgot to add that you might try the side mount type, which attaches to the lower - those would be more stationary and easy on the break down for cleaning....but I would have a smith do the work...

Thanks for the great info! You can probably tell I am new to the SKS.
The scope mounts I see advertised are the replacement cover types, what is the best type of mount and where can I get one?
Are the more expensive scopes worth the money given the distance limitations of the SKS 7.62x39??

I highly recommend the reciever mount with the two screws/nuts on each side that contact the lower receiver. Yes there are posible Zero problems with removing even this set-up for cleaning, but I have discovered that leaving one side set (left tight) and unscrewing the other side to remove the cover results in minimal zero change...I could be just lucky. Anyway, I picked my mount and scope up several years back at a gun show as a combo deal...just to see if they were any good...for under $50 bucks I seem to recall. I am very satisified! Good luck...you may look at Shotgun News or scan the SKS postings. 0
