what is the purpose of the foward assist plunger on the bushmaster thanks to all who answer

  to help seat the bolt foward if the casing sticks a bit in the chamber, if you can get it to seat foward and fire and eject it's easier than trying to pluck it out with the charging handle or pulling the round out manually.

  In the event that a round fails to chamber you can use the FA to physically force the bolt carrier home- with in limits! You can do this with an M1 or M14 rifle by hitting the operating handle with the heel of the hand...or boot, but the AR-15's charging handle has no such capability. Exactly why anyone would want to try to force a jammed round into the rifles chamber was lost on the AR-15's designer, Gene Stoner and he fought against the idea. The Army insisted that this feature be added to the M16 and this resulted in the M16A1...and a $4 price increase in the unit cost of each rilfe to the Army. The Air Force M16 Rifles were not fitted with FA. If you look at the AR-15 bolt carrier you will see a number of teeth along its side. These teeth are used with the FA plunger to ratchet the carrier home and chamber the round. The device you see on the right side of your Bushmaster was not a Stoner design at all; Instead it was developed by a Mr. Sturevant of Colt.

  And Mr. STONER was right!! Once you cram that corroded, green tinged shell in the action, the gas tube is probably plugged up and gas cant get to the bolt to drive it back, but thats ok, you crammed your shell so tight in the chamber, it'll never come out, but the rim will rip off, leaving you a real problem, cause HQ didn't issue any cleaning rods!!
