GB Savage 110 Switch Bbl Range Report
I finally got to shoot the 110 30-06 I got off GB { THANKS michaelscjl in CA, great transaction }. I got a 223 bbl and a 308 SS bbl off E#ay and bought all the conversion bits from Midway. The conversion is very simple. Attention to the small details is the key.
I put the 223 bbl on the thing and an inexpensive Bushnell 4 to 12 { THANKS Opticstraded on GB }. From a Hoppe's benchrest and bags { E#ay } I managed several small groups with the best being 3/8" CTC for 3 shots. This is a factory sporter contour bbl so I let it cool app 30 secs. between shots. Our range has a max of 80 yds so the groups would be slighty larger at 100yds. This is without any bedding work and a stock adjustable trigger adjusted a low as I could safely get it. I had heard that Savage 110's were accurate but this was surprising. The best ammo was some Winchester 45 gr HP. Some late 70's Win ss109 mil-spec shot around 1 1/2".
For some more fun I had purchased a 22lr adapter for the 223 chamber and fired several groups with some CCI Green Tag and some Rem Thunderbolt. The best group was app 1 3/4". The point of impact was app 10 1/2" low. The adapter is very simple to use and the need to push out the fired case and stick in a new one was not that big of a deal. Although the green tag is supposed to be "target" ammo I am not very impressed. One group sported a "flyer" that was app 4" above the rest of the group. I think it was a little hotter than the others resulting in less drop.
The shooting bud for the day is an OLD military guy who also did some benchrest in the 50's and he commented that the gun was fun to shoot and I couldn't have agreed more.

The most probable reason for the poor performance of the 22lr ammo is the excessive jump to the rifling required by the chamber sleeve. You need to clean your barrel after shooting 22lr before using .223. The deposits left in the barrel by the rimfire ammo could cause high pressures with standard centerfire ammo.
