I've been thinking about a mini 14 or a ranch rifle to buy as a hog/coyote/plinking gun. I have heard about bad accuracy, how bad, I plan on putting a scope on it and never shooting more than 200 yards, unless I'm just plinking. If you don't think this would be a good choice can you please provide some others, I'm looking for around a .223 or a .308 in a semi auto with mags of at least 20 rds. I'm trying to stay away from ARs, SKSs, and things of that sort. For a final question could you please tell me the difference between a mini 14 and a ranch rifle.[?]

At 200 yards the mini 14 or Mini 30 works well. The Ar types work sooo much better. I would spend your money on a Bushmaster AR and you will be very pleased. My 2 cents [8D]

gap 1916 I don't have the budget for an AR, also I'm trying to stay away from an assault type rifle.

Why don't You pickup a Turkish 8mm for around $75.00 at J&G in Prescott, Az. Then a used Sporterized Stock at a Gun Show or someones gunsmith shop for around $50.00..and an inexpensive Scope and Set of Mounts and Rings for about $75.00...For around $225.00 to $250.00..and maybe even less...You can have a Rifle thats good enough for anything on the American Continent...Makes a good Rat Around Gun...I've carried one around for years...looks like crap...but has never let me down.. and Ammo is Dirt Cheap.......Something to think about...

Here is my 2 cents. A mini 14 is capable of shooting coyotes out to 200 yards, but it is not the best choice. A bolt gun or single shot is. However, I also think that wanting a weapon that is capable of having a 20 round magazine is a poor compromise of accuracy verses capacity.
If you want a weapon that has a 20 round magazine you are almost getting to the point of wanting an assault type weapon. If you are wanting a coyote/pig getter, then focus on a hunting style weapon. I realize that a Mini is quite capable of doing dual duty.
As to the difference between a ranch rifle and a standard mini, it is my belief that the ranch has integral mounts and the standard mini utilizes (needs) a base. I think the base is usually included with the gun, but I am not positive. JM2CW

You want a semi auto with magazine capacity of 20 rounds in a .223 or .308, but you want to stay away from "assault type rifles"? What you are wanting is the definition of an "assault rifle". You might try one of the Saiga rilfes imported by EAA, I cant speak for accuracy but they have a very nice looking .308 "AK action" rifle that comes with a 10 round magazine, the butt-stock looks like a typical deer rifle. 0 -
Ok 20 rounds is a bit much for not wanting an AR, AK, SKS, or something else. But I want something that will hold a little more than about 5 rounds, and the ability to reload quickly. I don't really care for the saigi or whatever.

How about a Remington DM (detachable magazine) in .223 or 22-250. The magazine holds 5 and is just as fast to reload as a Mini. It would be more accurate but it will not hold more than 5. Just a thought.

My apologies they do not make .223 or 22-250 in the DM. OOPS How about a Browning BAR in 308? The A-bolt also has a removeable magazine which would be a little slower but still faster than a top feed. Just another thought. I have better facts this time.

lWelcome Darrel. I think your choice of a Mini-14 is a good one. I have a Ranch Rifle in .223, that I carry around the ranch with me. They are not super accurate, but do yoman duty on coyotes, jacks and other vermin. I put a simmons 2x7 scope on mine, and it shows up game very well. I've shot a number of coyotes, skunks, badgers, jackrabbits and sheep killin dogs with it, the longest probably 200 yards. On the shooting bench, I can only get 2-2.5 inch groups on its best day, but its rugged, dependable, and feels good in the hands, and quick to the shoulder. The Ranch Rifle differs from the Standard model by having built in scope bases, and a buffer type system for the action, that does not beat up the brass or the rifle in recoil. If you're going to scope your rifle, get the Ranch Rifle, otherwise the standard model has to go to a gunsmith for drilling and tapping for scope mounts. Some guys say the aftermarket 20 and 30 round mags are no good, but I've never had any problems with mine, USA brand I think.

I guess I've been spoiled by accuracy but if the only thing I could get to shoot was a mini-14 or ranch rifle, I'd quit shooting!! Good thing they have high capacity clips because the chances are you're going to need a bunch of backups!!! GHD 0
