The best defensive round in 9 mm Luger?

I always used the surplus ammo or other cheap stuff for target practice. Have to boxes of CARBON hollowpoints for the bad day.
Recently I read lots of posts on the different forums that +P ammo like CARBON does not give you too many advantages over some other normal pressure loads. So please give me the opinion on the best round in 9mm. I own SIG226, Walther P99 and Walther P38 all in 9mm.
I like 9mm because I somehow can shoot better with 9mm. I always read the gun related publications and see many new developments in defensive ammo. Unfortunally I have no time to evaluate them all. So please help and share your personal experience.

    Bullet Placement. The +P and +P+ do you no good if you dont hit the target. A 9mm placed in the head will stop anyone. If you are looking at body hits bigger is better. My 2 cents [8D]

    IKMD.... First, let me say welcome to the forum. The best 9mm bullets for defense are the heavier 147gr hollow points. The heavier weight enhances their ability to penetrate deep, but keep in mind that weight is no substitute for good shot placement.

    Winchester "black talons" (very expensive and hard to get) are excellent.
    Winchester 147 gr subsonics, Corbon, Federal, all make quality ammo. Any ammo that you pick should be tested for reliable function and accuracy before you use it for defense.

    Most 9mm hp rounds will do the trick once your target is hit. The key many times is to find a round, that is not necessarily the hottest, but one you can handle easily in case you need a second round to finish the job.

    The best defensive round is the one that shoots when you pull the trigger. Reliability is most important. I'd bring accuracy next. Then I'd worry about bullet weight and velocity.

    Shop around, buy a box of everything, and go out and see what your guns like best.

    One in the head, 2 in the chest. Try Federal 124 gr Hydra Shocks, they work real well. Hopefully you'll survive your 1st gun fight, and when you do, you'll toss them whimp 9mms and get a real gun, like a .45acp!

    I AGREE WITH LEEBLACKMAN RELIABILITY AND ACCURACY I OWN MOST CALs.BUT I THINK THAT 9MM IS A GOOD DEFENSE CAL. THE GERMAN ARMY USED THEM AND U.S.ARMY USES THEM IT DON'T TAKE ALOT OF PRACTICE JUST POINT AND CLICK TO HIT YOUR TARGET. P.S. I ALSO OWN FOUR 45s. and a 40cal.

    Well, don't plan on hitting anybody in the head when you are pumped on adrenalin. The best you are probably going to do is place your shots to the center mass, but odds are you won't, most never do. Defensive purposes first off I would choose a hollow point of which there are many variaties, I prefer federal hydroshocks myself but it's just a personal preference. With the +p you are going to get deeper penetration but I wouldn't worry too much about +p rounds, most who have to defend their lives with their weapon have to shoot their targets multiple times anyway because they almost never hit a critical area on the attackers body with the first, second, third, fourth shot....ect... and when you do hit that critical area after a few rounds it's not going to matter much if it's a +p or not.

    It will? You haven't seen to many REAL gunshot wounds. Head shots are RISKY and not always effective. YOu ASSUME perfect placent. All but impossible.

    Very trendy but not very logical. Cops kiss the entire body 92% of the time at 21 feet or less, so moving to a smaller moving target will be better? Me thinks not. Fads come and go.
    Some morons say fire TWO..really? That is like telling a 14 year old boy having sex for the first time to stick it in and out twice and to stop and let you know if he likes it.

    Bullet placement is the key. I go for 20 in the torso, 10 in the head, 5 in each leg. Believe me, he will not walk away. [:D]

    Even in self-defense, a head shot will raise many questions / issues.

    Any PREMIUM 9mm hollow-point round is good.

    What questions? Find me ONE case where it was a legal issue. I'd love to look it over. Also find any SCIENTIFIC source showing a hollowpoint bullet in a handgun is more effective than a FMJ. If the bullet is perfectly placed less than 50% of the HP's will expand. and they expand at the end of the wound channel where it doesn't help much.
