What Scope for a Rem. 742

I recently acquired a Rem. 742 30-06. It's the high gloss version etc. I was looking for input as to a high gloss variable power scope and the assoc. mounting. I'll mainly be target shooting (deer every once in a while in W. Virginia). I want one that will fit nicely and look as if it where made for the gun while able to take a beating from the recoil. Suggestions please, I'm certain some of you have one fully equipped in your locker and it wasn't the first scope you chose currently on the rifle. That's what I'm trying to avoid. I've had good success with Bushnell on my other smaller cal. rifles & I like very fine cross hairs rather than the other options avail. if possible.

PS Money's not a major concern (without getting carried away) range 100,200 & 300 yrds. If this model will make that far,with resaonable accuracy. Same question for a Reminton 600 .308 that kicks like a very angry mule. I don't think the gun likes me.

If you have factory open sights, I'd put raised scope-mounts and top it with a variable scope. For a raised application, I'd chose something like a 4x10x40 (or smaller objective, so you can see well under it).
If you don't have factory open sights or don't need the gun for close-up work, I'd drop the scope down and buy a 2x7x32 or 3x9x40mm (minimum objective size). Just remember for hunting not to over-power your minimum power setting... But for target shooting this isn't an issue. I've shot numerous deer where I had to figure out where I was looking at because they were too close for my 4.5 power scope and all I could see was deer hair. I got them all however, it just takes longer.
If money is the deciding factor, I'd choose Simmons. I've got several on everything from my .22 to a .458 win mag, to my .50 caliber muzzleloader. If money isn't as much of an issue, I'd choose a good Leupold scope. Personally, I think they are as good as any European scope (IMHO).

SEAWISH, I'd go with a Leupold 2x7 for hunting, if your going to do a lot of target shooting, a 3x9 would be fine, you can get many type of crosshairs from Leupold. As far as the scope mounts go, forget the see-thru type, they require you to pick your head up off the stock, and that increases recoil, which you seem not to like.
As far as the Remington 600, put a recoil pad on,and/or a muzzle break.. If you still don't like it e-mail me, I been looking for one and will buy it. Hope this helps!!
