AR15 or Sprinfield M1Scout Squad?
I know I'm comparing apples to oranges, but if you had the choice, would you rather have a preban AR15 in .223 (Colt or Armalite) or the new Springfield Scout Squad M1 in .308? These are the two guns I'm considering buying. I just want a good all-around gun for target shooting and defense.

O, go with the .308, you can shoot surplus ammo at paper, balistic tip for hunting opportunities occure and any thing you can load for the defense option. Have you considered an M1A "Bush" or "Scout" or an AR10 which has very mild recoil? The .308 gives you a lot more knock down power when you need it. Or do what dano suggested, get both. Work a deal with your local ArmaLite dealer and get an AR15 and AR10. 0 -
I don't think I can afford both! A friend of mine said there's something strange about gripping the M1 that's uncomfortable, but I'm not sure what he was talking about. I've also heard good things about the Armalites.

The M1A only feals strange if your not used to a real gun. Your friend was probably brought up on ARs and AKs. Pick a M1A up, and you'll know what a REAL Rifle is!!

O, why are you wanting to get rid of all that ammo (other post)if you are wanting an AR15/10 or SA. Keep the 7.62 ammo, sell the rest and your AR-7.62x39 and get an SA. If I could only have one, it would be a SA Bush or Scout w/syn stock. The "Bush" is ~4 inches shorter than standard but has NM front site, long enough to get full powder burn and accuracy but short enough to get through the woods and not weigh too much. Add a few(6)20rd mags and a 5rd for hunting and you are good to go.[;)] 0 -
Wait for the assult rifle ban to lift and then purchase. Prices will go down. Then again it the ban does not lift pre ban may go up in price. For plinking and self defence I would go with the Armalite or Busmaster AR15 A2. The M1A is a great rifle but not that much fun to plink with and for self defence, only if you are shooting 300 to 500 meters away. That sounds like offence to me. My 2 cents. [8D]

Go with the M1A if you can afford it. Much nicer rifle than the AR's. Understand though that you could get 2 AR mags for the price of 1 M1A mag.
Offensive weopon because it can shoot 300 to 500 meters?
Why limit yourself to 250 meters?
