Charter Arms Undercover .38 special

I was wanting to get some expert opinions on this gun. I looking to buy it for my girlfriend to carry in her purse. Does Charter make good firearms? Would this be a good selection for self defense?

  I don't recall the model, but Gun Test compared a CCW Taurus and a Charter Arms and rated the C.A. better and found it to function quite well.

  The trigger pull on Charter's is so heavy that some full-size men have trouble firing it.
  
  I wouldn't buy on unless she has a chance to try it out first.
