AK 47....SAR 1 or SAR 3 ??
Gonna get me one of these in a month or two. Was wondering about which caliber to go with. The .223 has appeal for me because I have a friend that reloads that round for his AR. Is there a difference in the magazines? Would a 30 round SAR 1 still work in a SAR 3, or are they caliber specific?
Any help is always appreciated.

I would go with the caliber I liked best,but the SAR-1 Mags will not work in a SAR-3 Gun.As of right now good Romanian Mags are plentyful and sale anywhere from $9.99-$15.00.I have a SAR-1 and love it.Good Luck.

Mags are caliber specific. I've heard that the finish on some of these romanian guns is horible. A guy I know said it looked like they literally threw these things into a pile after skiping them on the ground.
Guns function fine but may need a little touch up on the finish. I would add that if I bought one I'd go for the 7.62x39, so many more mags out there & ammo is cheaper than .223.

I have been asking myself this same question for about a month now. I like the .223 round and have an AR type that uses this ammo. So I am going to get the SAR-3. The cost of ammo is sooooo cheap the difference between the 7.62 X 39 and .223 is nominal. My 2 cents [8D]

I went through the same ordeal last year when I bought my AK. I really wanted a 7.62, but all that I saw were .223. I was pateint an finally found waht I really wanted. I now have an AR for .223. I like variety, so having two guns that use the same ammo is not real important to me.

They do use different mags and the mag for the SAR-3 is specific to the SAR-3 and doesn't use the Norinco mags. CDNN has/had 30rd SAR-3 mags awhile back for 20 bucks. I have an SAR-1 and it is a nice AK, I plan on get the SAR-2 and SAR-3 soon, but if you opt for the SAR-3 buy mags while available, or else you might be paying a lot for them in the near future. 0 -
Inter-Ordnance has plentiful excellent metal mags for the SAR-3. "...a little touch-up on the finish..." that's the understatement of the year! The wood's horrible, too. (good shooters, though) 0 -
I bought a SAR 7.62x39 a while back and have been quite
happy with it. Bear in mind that the length of pull
(I think that's the correct term) is VERY short. I'm
a big guy, and my nose was practically touching the
real sight. I added a 3 1'2" piece of wood to the
back of the stock (yes, it looks as nice as it sounds)
and it's so much easier to use. Find one with a good
trigger pull, though; the lot I looked through had
some AWFUL ones before I finally found one that is
quite nice.0 -
Mlincoln brought up another point I forgot about. I found the SAR didn't shoulder real well. Length of pull is it I guess? Anyway I found the MAK-90 thumbhole stock to fit my shoulder well and the grip was nicer (read fatter) than the plastic ones on the SAR. MAK-90's seem to be going for a premium around here for the last year or more, when they show up at all. Bottom line is make sure you handle the gun and even shoot it if possible before you buy.
