.25 self defense ammo part II
So many people whined about not liking the .25 at all, the question of ammo didn't really get addressed much. I load mine with Hornady XTP alternating with ball. If the hollow points won't penetrate the ball might.Would everyone who says the .25 is useless like to volunteer to be shot in the face point-blank with one? Shot placement makes all the difference. A few years ago an Indiana State Trooper was killed by a single round from a .25, some drunk felon panicked during a traffic stop

JUST KIDDING THE REASON PEOPLE TALK ABOUT .25CALs IS WHEN CARRYED IN THE POCKET THEY PICK UP LINT AND JAM BUT AS I TELL THOSE WHO CRITICIZE IT IS THAT THEY HIT A LOT HARDER THAN I CAN. IF THE HOLLOW POINT WORK WELL IN IT THATs WHAT I WOULD USE.I HAVE TWO A BAUER AND A BERETTA I USE BALL AMMO BECAUSE IT WORKs WELL IF I KNEW THAT I WOULD NEED A WEAPON I WOULD CARRY LARGE. THERE ARE MORE PEOPLE KILL BY SMALL CALs BECAUSE OF THE PRICE SURE LARGER CALIBERS HAVE MORE STOPPING POWER BUT I DON'T LOOK TO NEED A GUN EVER TIME I LEAVE THE HOUSE. IF I DID I WOULD CARRY A SHOTGUN

Guys, we are not living in Deadwood in the 1880's. Just being armed is an deterant to the bad guys. The typical crook would much rather knock over my aunt Milly armed with her handbag than take a chance with even old Jeff. How many guys are going to think "hey this guy has only a 25 ... I can take that"? Guns generally look much larger when they are pointed at you! Now if you were in the OK Corral, that's a different story!

hornady xtp rated best. other good ammo, win open point expanding, glasher safety slug.
25 autos bad rap comes from cheap guns that jam, cheap ammo to go with it. if you have a good quality gun, ammo thats functions and you feel ok with it as your carry gun, go for it.0 -
Lots of issues come into play. Instead of debating the merits (or lack of) of the 25 acp lets look at the practicle application. Carrying a handgun for personal protection is difficult and takes a lot of preperation and thought. Finding something that is comfortable, reliable, not to large, not to heavy, easy to conceal, easy to carry plus several other variables I can't think of creates quite a problem. Yes there are prople who will carry the 44 mag and 45 acp no matter the weather and discomfort. That is by far the exception. Many people will purchase a handgun for personal protection and end up leaving it at home as it becomes "work" to carry. A readily available 22 or 25 is better than a 45 which is home in the bureau drawer.
Now to the ammo question. For many years the 22 rimfire killed more people in this country than any other calibre. Please note I said kill not stop. These smaller calibers impart little energy upon impact but have the tendency of entering the body and traveling around a bit. In the process they hit major organs or arteries which many times result in death. The person so shot may run for quite a distance or continue his assault before his system shuts down. The whole concept behind a self protection handgun is to stop someone from using deadly force against yourself or smeone else. These situations occur within an arms length to about 20 feet. Much further than that and someone is going to be asking some very tough questions, like why didn't you flee. When confronted with a situation that forces you to use deadly force, you should be using the force to extracate yourself from danger and not be moving toward it(unless you are a police officer). Weather you agree or not, that is the reality of the situation. You will be hard pressed to convince the local prosecutor that you were acting in self defense if you are shooting at the bad guy who is 25 to 50 yards away when you could have simply fled. Unless of course he is shooting at you with a rifel or shotgun. If thats the case you should be running for cover anyway. All that being said, hi-tech 25 ACP bullets will probably not dump much more energy than FMJ. They might in fact because of their design not penetrate to a level that will do much good. There are many doccumented instances where small bullets were stopped by heavy clothing and body mussel and or fat.
If you choose to carry a small caliber self denence handgun reliablity and accuracy are of extreme importance. You should carry in a place where you can get the weapon into play immediately. This includes drawing from concealment fireing and hitting you target exactly where you intended. No small feat while under extreme pressure. After repeated practise you should be able to place all the rounds (usually 6 to 10) in an area you can cover with your hand at a distance of 10 feet. When you can do this every time, then you can think about carrying. Despite their diminutive stature these samll rounds tend to make noise consistent with a much larger calibre. Try fireing a short barreled 25 acp and you will see. Very few people will advance into a cloud of bullets coming at them, but there are some. In that rare instance you will be very glad of all the time you put in practising. Seven or eight rounds in the face should deter or stop the most agressive assailent.0 -
The only reason to recommend a .25 to someone who cannot handle a larger caliber due to physical limitations or maybe as a tiny backup gun. No one questions its lethal potential on an adversary, but whether you will survive the fight. Anything smaller than .38 +P puts you at a distinct disadvantage.
