Savage Switch Bbl observations
Getting the mag box off is a pain in the neck.
The nut is VERY tight. I would like to know the actual recommended torque spec. The Wheeler nut wrench from Midway has two 1/2" square drive cutouts so you can use a 1/2" breaker bar. I don't think I could have gotten the nut loose without the cheater bar. I used a 4' piece of 1.25X.120 tubing for a cheater bar on the Wheeler action wrench.
Watch out for the sear spring if you take the trigger off. [:I]
The 223 bolt head had a bigger radius and the front baffle's chamfer needed some slight grinding to clear.
I have a 20 ton press and used it as a bbl vise. I ordered the replacement hardwood inserts and used the press to apply the pressure. Saves over $30 and the press makes a very secure stand.
I did some polishing on the bolt body where the cocking piece bears when lifting the bolt knob. I also polished the area of the cocking piece that bears against this ramp. Just light polishing !!
The stock trigger is mostly stamped sheet metal and some deburring along all the edges results in a nicer trigger pull.
If you buy take-off Savage bbls don't expect the iron sights to line up. The holes on my 223 bb are at app 8:00 as viewed from the rear [:0]
I think I will hit Wilson Shoals tomorrow if any locals want to meet up.
