mauser help

I recently purchased a 8x57 Mauser Model 98 per the tag on the gun at the time of purchase, before purchasing it I asked if it had been inspected by thier gun smith and was assured it was safe to shoot. Before purchasing it I also asked a friend about it and he told me that the 98 was a stronger rifle and he thought but wasn't sure if all model 98's had the .323 bore and more powerful loads could be used in it. When I brought it to his house and compared it with his 98 and after some research on the internet we believe it is a model 93 because of the ring demension of 1.3" and trigger guard bolt spacing of 6-5/8" it also has a notch in the front ring we are assuming loading the rifle or ejection clearance. The only stampings on the rifle is a serial number on the rear reciever ring and number 791 on the barrel. My questions are were any small ring model 98 Mauser's made and do all model 98's have the larger.323 bore? Also do you agree with the model 93 theory[?] Any help would be greatly appreciated, Ed

    I am building a 300 win mag on a mauser action and have run into a problem. When I put ammo into the gun it is to long to fit do I have to shave down the ends so it will fit as well as throat the ramp? The ammo just about fits so it looks like it won't take much. Any gunsmiths out there that have built mags. please help

    If it is a 8mm (large ring) it should handle whatever you can fit into it. I would still have it checked out, mayby even check it's hardness. Roy Weatherby used to build his magnums on commerial FN Mauser actions, and the 300 Weatherby is in the 60,000 PSI range.

    rordog,it has the .98" threads,large ring 98's have 1.1" only don't they? perhaps the caliber was misrepresented to me.BDJr

    Bigdaddyj, I'm sorry, but I can't find my specs on action length and width of receiver. Maybe someone else can enlighten us?

    It's not unusual (in fact it's very common) for the turks to have large ring outside dimentions, and small ring threads.
    As far as calibers go, easist is any of the prechambered small ring barrels. Strength wise the receiver will handle any of the calibers a standard large ring will.
    Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.

    I believe all the Turk Mauser recievers were made in either Germany or Czechoslovakia and are made of high quality metal so you are safe in whatever you do with it. If it is a small ring I would personally put on a 6.5X55 bbl. If large, either 30-06 or .308. JMHO.

    The Turk Mauser is a regular LR 98 action with SR (ie 1893,1916) barrel and threads. Although it does have the LR bolt and receiver, I would caution against using a hi-pressure cartridge in one due to the narrow threads on the barrel. Probably safe, I'd just prefer a LR or magnum Mauser action for the big cartriges.

    You are limited to max length of about 3.3". That is too short for 30/06 military fmj and some of the plastic tip commercial. with that in mind, many of the short mag cartridges will not function w/o grinding the action. Stick with standard rounds 30/06 or shorter and keep pressures under that of the 30/06.

    The Turk mauser is a long action, it will accept a 30.06 length cartridge, the 1893/1916 SR Mauser will not accept a cartridge longer than an 8mm and won't safely handle the pressure of cartridges greater than an 8mm.

    Guys, I'd like to chamber it for standard 30/06. Anyone see any problem with doing that? Side by side with a 98 action they look the same. It was only when I saw the threads that I began to doubt if 30/06 was a wise choice. Thanks for all of your help. BDJr

    THE TURK M-98 SHOULD BE FINE CHAMBERED FOR THE .30/06, THE MAGAZINE MAY BE A LITTLE SHORT FOR SOME COMERCIAL AMMO (REM. 180 GN RN COME TO MIND) BUT IT WILL WORK WELL WITH MOST ANYTHING ELSE.
