EPOXY works the best...

I recommend that you use a Sanford Peel-Off china marker available from large office supply stores. While not impervious to solvents, it holds up pretty well during normal cleaning & oiling, and can easily be removed with acetone & a bristle brush.

Go to your local hardware store that sells welding supplies. Ask for a "paintstik". Comes is white and black (white for dark weapons, black for nickle or stainless). Apply to a cleaned weapon by rubbing it over the letters/numbers you want to highlight (proofmarks too). Couple of minutes later, using a business card, scrape off the excess. With an oily rag remove any traces not in the letters. Permanent unless you use acetone or wire brush. I use it for all my weapon photography with extremely good results. 0
