Herters J9

I have a Herters J9 Mauser 98 action in .243. It has great wood on it and I know nothing about it. Can some one give me some background on this weapon as to who actualy manufactured it and a ruff idea on a value. A local gun dealer is wanting to buy it but I have no idea what it is worth. Thank you in advance for any help you can give me[:)]

  I believe your "J-9" rifle was made in England by "Parker-Hale" of Birmingham, it's built on a "Santa Barbara" action that was made in Spain.
  The Parker-Hale designation for the rifle Herters sold as the J9 was Model 1100.
  Generally firearms with the Herters name on them don't have a great resale value. Their considered a "Store Brand" similar to "J C Higgins".
  My guess is that the value would be in the range $250 - $350, to get that it would have to be in excellent original condition.

  There were at least three (U-9/J-9 XJ-3) models built like this for Herters mostly during the 60's when you could buy rifles via mail order. All are built on Mauser 98 actions as far as I can tell. Some were built in England and some were built in Czechoslovakia, and there may have been other european manufacturers as well. They were built to look like well known models of the time, but to undersell them. Quality was pretty high for the most part, but sales were not high enough to carry them beyond the early 70's. I have a couple of Herters catalogs from that era showing them. Rufe-Snow is correct that they sell as shooters, with very little collector interest, though there are a fews "Herter's" collectors, I paid $295 for my XJ-3, a little over a year ago, so rufe-snow is about right on the value range for very good to excellent condition.
