Bump Firing M-1 Garands

A question for the GunBroker experts:

Can one effectively bump fire a M1 Garand? If so, has this method ever been used in a practical application in training or battle with the Garand or other military semiautomatic rifles?

Trying to settle a local gun range debate concerning bump firing: A big kid's foolish fun or a practical shooting technique.

  I think it's just a big kid's kind of fun. Go try it with a full load .40 or .45. Bullets everywhere.

  Ironic the subject of "bump firing" should come up.
  The last couple weekends I have been trying to perfect the operation with my Cobray M11/9mm.
  Getting pretty good at it!
  Sure enough, Sheriff was notified of "Full Auto" fire from my personal shooting range.
  SOOOOOOOOO-He came out to ask me about it and I proceeded to show him the joy of "bump firing".
  Only objection he had was, "spend more time loading mags than shooting".

  While I can't speak for others,when I joined the Marine Corps,we took our marksmanship training with the M1 Garand rifle. At no time was "bump" fireing taught. The only time that I have seen this done was by someone with a semi-auto AK that wanted his rifle to sound like it was full auto. In my opinion, no one can effectively bump fire anything. From what I can see all you are doing is spraying bullets around.

  "EFFECTIVELY" Empty Mags and Spray Lead @ high rate per minute and hear rat-a-tat-tat!! YES

  The M1 can't be bump fired effectively, or ineffectively; it has too much recoil.

  That's strange, because I've bump-fired my Garand, and found it to be controlable (but the ejecting clips in the face were not cool).
  
  As far as being effective for a training/combat seneraio, it's not (nor is bump fire with any semi-auto). Just a big kids fun thing

  "...bump fire..." What? Is this some US term? Are you referring to holding one's finger sideways in the trigger guard and whipping it back and forth quickly? Kid's foolishness. Unsafe and a waste of ammo. Certainly not practical in any way shape or form.

  "Bump firing" is done by holding the forend of the gun in your left hand and using your arms & upper body weight to put forward pressure on the rifle, while holding the trigger finger of the right hand stationary. As the gun fires, the recoil pulls it back, but that force is counteracted by the pressure on the front end of the rifle. When all forces are balanced, this results in full auto fire.
  
  If Tailgunner can do it with an M1, well, he's a better man than I am (or, at least, a bigger, stronger, man than I am.)

  With an 8 round clip, bump fire would be a useless idea. Come to think of it, except as a noise-maker, it is a useless idea anyway[:p]

  I used to do something similar with my AK, I would hold the forend with my left hand and stick my right forefinger through the trigger guard and hold the back end of the guns weight up with the same finger then with every ounce of strength I'd try to keep the trigger held down and while the gun would recoil it would keep setting the trigger off. It sounded great but I never hit anything except sand and rocks.

  Assuming you are careful that none of your bullets will leave the range it is good harmless fun. My AK starts to overheat on the third 30 round magazine and then locks up until it cools down.
