You should listen to yer local 'smith.
If you are going to only shoot it occasionally; buy a shotgun- your accuracy wil be adequate in a "home" scenario.
As far as "quality" either gun is made in America, any Colt 1911/1991 or Springfield in .45 will make holes where you point it, and both accept McCormick mags.
If you're buying with resale value in mind; buy 2. That way, you can actually shoot one, and save the other for investment.
Keep in mind, however, that ANY gun will appreciate in value; given enough time.

If you know it all; you must have been listening.WEAR EAR PROTECTION!

I own at least 3 of each, and one can get a lemon or a gem from any of them. All are worth their prices. I like the new Colts best, myself.

Shadow, the Colts and Springfields you mentioned are the best 1911s on the market. They are both excellant guns. The only differance is the resale value of a Colt. It is unsurpassed.

Thanks for the information folks. I have learned more about the specific differences between the 1991 and 1911 guns (more plastic in the 1991). Still unclear as to the total value difference between the Colt 1911 and the Springfield (particularly the mil-spec), but It's clear that some think the colt has better value longterm. Not really looking hard at resale (I'm not a seller), but resale can sometimes be a quality identifier. The Kimber comments were interesting but I think the price is a bit high. I've narrowed it from four to three (Colt 1911A1, Springfields 1911 and Mil-Spec). May go with with the Colt just for namesake (although the Springfield certainly has a wonderful history of its own). Guess it will come down to what my gunsmith said... "Shooters choice".

Thanks to all who responded. As always.. you guys are a great help and I really appreciate the time you took to reply.

    Thanks,
