heat shield/ gas port- sks

Is it a pain to change the heat shield/ gas port cover on a sks?[?]

  A friend of mine just sanded his wooden heat shield down & then spray painted it black.
  Otherwise you have to tap out a rivet on the tube. I do know that Tapco http://www.tapco.com/ has replacement sks gas tubes with plastic or metal heat shields already installed.
