1954 "sweet 16" Browning A-5 Value.....
OK, got the year of the gun from the neighbor, but no Serial number. 1954, Browning Auto-5, "sweet sixteen".....Condition is very good. Square pistol grip. No Ventilated Rib...has steel.... "checkering" if you will... all the way to the bead or end of the barrel.... Made in Belgium. 16 gauge. very few "honest wear" marks. No major marks on barrel from shooting....(double nickel strips from recoil as you prob. allready know) No cracks in forearm. I have a 1984 "light 12".........it is in real nice shape......but not as good as the 54' Sw. 16..............What is it worth? Red.

Red, You've seen the shotgun yourself? They are on the web auctions fairly regularly and I see them at shows and handle every one I see. It is a fairly hot seller lately ranging from $700.00 to $1,000.00 for the clean Belgian; one with a vent rib barrel may go for 50% to 75% more. There are lots priced higher on the web auctions that go unsold so reserved and high start numbers can be misleading. I ran into one in 2002 and know it was a real bargain at $500.00 (a clean vent rib Belgian barrel can sell for that) and I don't expect to do it again, but you never know. The flat knob kinda surprises me for a 1954 shotgun but I'm not an authority. My '59 has a round knob and cross-hatched matte sight plane on a plain, modified-choke barrel. I believe the s/n on the 16 in question is at the same place as your Japanese Light 12, forward of the loading port in the bottom of the receiver...looks something like Sxxxxx. Red, you know the "what's it worth" is the toughest question. It is where the meeting of the mind occurs between a buyer and a seller. If I didn't have one and this one in question is all you describe with unaltered stock and no cracked wood I would probably offer $700.00. Maybe $750.00 if it had a short barrel and open choked (modified or bigger). There is a plain barrel, modified choke, round knob original stock and buttplate, with cracked forearm that needs replacing, maybe 80 percent finish, 1961 year for $750.00 near me now that I am contemplating. Red, I only just noticed your earlier post on this shotgun. I generally concur with Nord, and I probably wouldn't have replied had I seen his response. I attribute our slight variance in $value estimates to local experience - Belgian A-5's are extremely popular in South Louisiana, and SweetSixteen's, as well as 20's, are highly-sought. You know the "slight pitting" on the receiver is a negative, but I'm assuming you are interested in it to shoot it. I bought mine to shoot and had it on a couple of dove hunts last fall. Good luck.
