My wife is wanting a lever action deer rifle. We already have a 30-30 so I was looking at the 444 Marlin. Does anybody have any info as to the amount of recoil and haow well it shoots. I have a Marlin 450 and love the way it shoots and the knock down power. You can email me at jdolso1@msn.com

Here's a couple informative pages pertaining to the .444 marlin round.

I am a big fan of this chambering! [8D]

It doesn't matter what you shoot, just shoot it well...

I do not own one but have shot one. The recoil is potent. I would find someone who has one and let your wife shoot it to see if she likes it. Better yet just buy one and if she cannot stand the recoil then you have another one for your collection.

If she can stand the recoil, have you thought about a 45/70. There are a lot more ammo choices in this caliber. I have a Marlin guide gun 45/70 in stainless.

A 450 Marlin is just a rimless .45-70. Exact same ballistics. jdolso1, if the boss can shoot your 450 she can easily deal with a 444. Lighter bullets. Plan 'B' would be a Browning lever action in .243 if recoil is a problem. I've never been a big fan of the .30-30 myself. Too much recoil for the power of the round. Mind you, that was only out of a '94 Winchester.

Great caliber for brush hunting, used to own one but have since traded it, a freind of mine owns one and shot a deer with it last year, killed the deer even after the bullet went through a 6 inch birch tree, great knockdown power

I shot a deer at about 40 yards w/ a .240gr. bullett. It almost bent him in 1/2. totally dead one shot. Love It.
