Amateur Stock/Barrel Bedding

Putting an old Winchester single shot 22 into a refurbished used stock, is the glass material available in small quantities and is it much of a chore to do? I've read the posting re coating the barrel so as not to adhere to the glass - I can handle that. When I set the barrel into the stock and snug up the mounting screw, I can make the barrel "teeter" at the mounting screw so I guess that means this barrel (Mod 60) needs to be bedded in the stock (Mod 67) I appreciate any advice, well almost any.   There are kits avalable from Brownells to do one gun. They come with the release agent you will need. Pam works too. If you ever get one that will not release put it in the deep freeze for a couple of hours and take it out and strike to under side of the bbl near the forend with a rubber mallet and it will release.[;)]

  The easiest to use is Brownells Gel Glas bedding kit. The gel stays put better than the more liquid resin. Under $15 last I looked and one kit is enough to do a rifle.

  Well then Brownell's it is...thanks guys. Some of my dog-running, no wing-shooting, make-everything-into-chili hunting buds suggested a couple of thin beads of silicone adhesive/sealant and if that didn't work, maybe a couple of wraps of friction tape. They're a mess. I appreciate the sound advice. Best, Jim

  If you don't want to wait for an order from brownels to come in go to your local auto body supply and get a small can of tiger hair (fiber glass with strands) and have at it. this is much eaiser to work with than the liquid. there are two things you can do bed the barrel and action or just the action. the latter is recomended. I've done this by taking a thin piece of shirt card board and placing it under the barrel just in frount of the action spray the action well with W-D 40 or simmilar apply the glass to the reciever area and snug the screw. wait for the left over portion or glass to set and break the action free. a little heavy grease around the trigger assembly could keep the excess glass from gumming up your trigger. you might also check to see if there is some excess stock that needs to be relieved, a dremel works nicely.

  You can do it on the cheap by using 2 Ton epoxy glue (not the 5 minute) mixed with sawdust. Use paste floor wax as the release agent. You would want to try it on some scrap and play around with it some to get familiar with it. Won't cost much to try.
