Choosing a handgun??

I am looking to purchase a handgun for target practice, hunting, and self-defense(possibly concealed). I am looking at either a .40cal or .45. Any thoughts or suggestions?? I was pointed towards Glocks by a friend of mine who is in law enforcement. Any thoughts on Glocks?? Thanks

    Ok for general shooting but neither calibre is a hunting calibre for anything other than small game. Both are good defense calibres though.
    The most important thing about choosing a handgun is how well it fits your hand. Pop into any gun store and try 'em on for size. If you can't grip the pistol comfortably and reach the trigger that one's not for you. Have a look at as many different types as you can. If you can rent a few and shoot 'em, so much the better.
    I find Glocks are slippery without putting on a slide-on rubber grip. These aren't expensive and are fairly easy to come by. Not that here's anything wrong with a Glock. It isn't much use for hunting though. Think .44 magnum for hunting. A nice scoped Ruger Super Redhawk. Big, strong, SS, revolver but the grips are made for normal people's hands.

    The only Glock one should consider hunting with should be the model 20 in 10mm. The 10mm is a little more powerfull than a .357 magnum which is the least powerful handgun one should consider as a hunting handgun. The g-20 is not for the meek. Recoil is sharp and muzzle flash are impressive for an auto handgun. Glocks have a long trigger pull which does not cater to impressive accuracy.
    Personally I would recomend going with separate handguns for each intended purpose. Maybe a nice S&W revolver or 1911 single stack for target, a large frame revolver for hunting, and a Glock 19 or snubnose revolver for carry purposes.

    Why does everyone feel the need to burn that much powder?

    I own two Glocks a G26 & G31 I think they are great handguns but then again it's a matter of personal preference.

    I agree with Sunray. There is no one gun that will really fit all your purposes. A concealable gun will usually be too small to support a caliber sufficient for hunting or sighting radius for target or hunting.

    AS FAR AS A DEFENSE GUN I LIKE A SIG ALOT BETTER THAN A GLOCK.GLOCK HAVE HARDER RECOIL IN ANY CALIBER THAN ANY OTHER GUN IN THAT SAME CALIBER.SIGS SHOOT ALOT SMOOTHER.BUT AS I SAID IT IS MY EXPERIENCE.SIGS ARE A TOUCH MORE RELIABLE THAN GLOCKS AND IF YOU HAVE NEVER HEARD OF A K-B YOU NEED TO GO TO WWW.GLOCKSUCKS.COM.I DO NOT THINK GLOCKS SUCK,I THINK THEY ARE OK GUNS BUT THE INFO ON THIS SITE IS TRUE.AS MENTIONED IF YOUR WANTING A HANDGUN TO HUNT WITH YOU REALLY NEED TO GO .357 MAG OR LARGER

    The .45acp can be loaded as hot as the 10mm. Look at the Corbon line of ammunition. I choose the .45acp for all the needs you mentioned. Just choose the right ammunition for the job at hand. My 2 cents [8D]

    Hey Wade, go grab a Witness in either 357sig or 40S&W.
    Doesn't that feel good?
    They make compact versions as well, with ports and stuff.
    Unless you are forced by your police employer to only use Glock pistols; go for the Witness or the Sig-their ergonomics are more well-thought out and range from $3-900.
    And Wade, DON'T go hunting with ANY of these guns- you'll pi** off your prey, or wound it and never see it again!

    I should have elaborated on target practice and hunting needs. Target practice is old tv's and other stuff, and hunting will consist of vermin.
    I am on my way to the gun shop right now to try out some pistols. I will keep in mind all suggestions. Thanks

    I (along with many others) would NEVER suggest a defensive gun with porting. Why would you want to direct hot gasses and flame into your field of vision?

    The key to it all has been mentioned. What fits and feels good in your hand. I am partial to Glocks but prefer a 1911 over all the rest.
    Try out anything you can by renting one first at a range if possible.
