Remington 870 safety???

I have two 870's and the safety on one works just the opposite of the other. One of the guns was my Father-in-laws and he was left handed. It is not a lefthanded gun, so I suspect he had the safety switched over for a lefty! I have five young hunters in the family and I would like to switch the safety back so that the safety work the same!
Is this something I can do myself or would you advise taking it to a gunsmith?

    Maybe someone installed the block backwards. Might disassemble it and it'll be pretty obvious.

    I believe the only way to "right" this problem will be to install a right-handed trigger plate assembly.

    I'm a fan of the 870 myself and I would listen to Mr. Nunn. This topic came up several weeks ago (except they wanted a righty switched to a lefty, I think) and the consensus was to switch out the whole trigger plate assembly. This seemed to solve any potential liability issues that might crop up by doing a non-standard repair. As an added bonus (if you want to call it that) you could end up with one of those newfangled keyed safeties also. Heck, I'd be curious to find out Remington's official advice...

    If you find out please let me know. I have my dad's gun that had a left handed safety also. At one time my brother dropped it out of a tree stand and it had to go to the gunsmith. It came back with a right hand safety. It's funny but nobody noticed it until my father gave me the gun about ten years later.

    Do you know if there is a different part # on the trigger plate or a way I can verify it's ok? I know the smith that did it kept extra trigger assemblies on hand so he could just swap them. Hopefully that's what happened.

    I don't know about parts numbers.

    I know that Brownell's sells a lot of parts and they show a left and a right hand trigger plate assembly.

    the older model 870 was convertible to left-handed by just changing the safety button. [ that is how mine was done. ] when Rem. introduced the pure l-handed model they changed their trigger plates to prevent this. [ i guess to sell more l-hand models. ] if yours is a older model 60s or older you should be able to just change the safety button. if not you will be stuck buying a new trigger plate.[:)]

    You don't nee to buy a trigger plate. Probably just the safety itself.
    Pull the trigger assembly and check the location of the safety spring and detent ball. If the hole is off center to the right, just a safety will do.

    [:p] Pa,as BT99 has stated you should only have to buy a new right hand safety and install it, or have a gunsmith do it.By the way make sure the gunsmith gives you the old (left hand) safety as they don't make them anymore.

    Having worked for Remington for 28 yrs. I have build thousands of firecontrols for the model 870. There is no left or righthand safety button they are the same. Check your triggerplate and see if there are two holes in the rear for the safety ball if there is you can remove the safe turn it around and reinsert it and put the ball and pin and spring in the upper hole. Two holes were put in the triggerplates back in the 80s but did not work out. Your other solutions are to get a right hand trigger plate or se if Williams gunsight Co. has a conversion saftey button to change it from left toright. They use to make them to change the safety from right to left hand.

    I have a complete trigger assembly if you interested , just swap out assembly and keep the other as a spare :)
