Legal Thumbhole?
So are thumb hole stocks considered pistol grips by Gov?
Would a post ban AR with a compesator, thumbhole stock and detachable mag be a "evil black asault rifle" with more than two no no's on it?

A thumbhole stock is not a pistol grip and would not count as a banned feature under the 1994 Crime Bill. If you had an AR type rifle you could remove the pistol grip, add a thumbhole stock, and put on either a flash hidder or bayonet lug (only one of the two- not both). What exactly do you have in mind?

Mark - I don't mean to contradict you but I've been told by many "experts" that the thumbhole stock is counted as a pistol grip by our beloved BATF for "accounting" purposes because even though its part of the stock, it still "protrudes conspicously below the action" ... this is why there aren't anymore thumbhole stock assault "style" weapons being imported.
However!
When I ask these same experts "if the BATF considers the thumbhole stock a pistol grip, why can't I just put a real pistol grip and stock on my AK? or put an AUG stock on a USR?" I get the "ole side-step" and they tell me I need more US made parts to lower the imported parts count inorder to do that ... that's fine, but its not the question I asked ... then I just get a waltz and we dance around a bit.

Kimber, you are of course right that the BATF does consider a thumbhole stock to be a pistol grip for the purposes of "banned feature" counting for imported assault weapons. The BATF Import Branch for many years considered thumbholes a legal side step to the 1989 ban on imported firearms with military features. This was done to appease importers who had many thousands of rifles stuck in limbo when the 89 Bush ban went into effect and allowed them to sell their guns instead of dumping them in the ocean. Regulations have changed over the years, but with the number of pistol grip imported rifles with US made parts readily available, no one seems to care. Since Wagion's rifle is an AR and not an import I dont see the thumbhole stock as an issue in the 1994 Crime Bill- but then I don't see much point in trading off a pistol grip for a bayonet lug either. I get the feeling that this entire question is just another pointless exercise.
