2 part handgun question??
1st part: I am in between .40 and .45 for a home defense / utility gun. What are the major differences in the two calibers??
2nd part: I am looking to spend about $400 and have been looking at Glocks, Springfield XD, and a couple HK's(little higher in price). Any thoughts for a good handgun in this range??

T, both are excellent calibers, .40 is faster., for home defense, make sure you consider what is behind your target before firing. At $400, you are looking at 2nd hand. Compared to most .45 in same price range, the Glock weights less. They are also very easy to take down and durable, ya just have to get use to the trigger/safety. Go to a local range and ask someone if you can fire their pistol. I've seen a few very good condition Glock 23's go for $425-450 but thy go fast. 0 -
You'll find all kinds of opinions with these (and other calibers)here. You should be well-suited by either. I might add 10mm (.40, but about 1/8" longer case - more powerful, but more recoil), and .357 sig (a .40 case necked down to basically a 9mm). ANY of these calibers would be a very good choice. Much of that decision needs to come from you, the shooter.
I'd recommend going to a gun range and renting the guns you are thinking about in the calibers above. Often you'll find one that just fits YOU better than the rest, or you might find one that YOU are more accurate with, or one that YOU like the arrangement better. Why did I capitolize YOU so much? Because if YOU are the shooter, then YOU need to try some out and see which one YOU like.
All of us here have our personal preferrences, but it doesn't mean you will like them. That said, my personal carry weapon is a Glock model 20 in 10mm, and I have several 15 round hi-caps loaded with hydra-shocks...

Soprano.... First, both the .40 and .45 are excellent defense rounds. The .45 uses heavier bullets and thus has more knockdown or stopping power, but bullet placement is more important than bullet size or weight.
If you would want your significant other to be able to use the gun in a stressful situation, the Glock in .40 cal would be a good choice as it is simple to operate, and the .40 has less recoil than the .45.
Another consideration is over penetration, to wit, shooting through your walls when you dont want to, and hitting a friendly.0 -
Either caliber is a very good defensive round. Any of your choices of a handgun would also be good. Go with the one that feels the most natural to you.

Have you had experence with either caliber?Have you ever shot a 45 or a 40? What guns did you use? Did you like them,Could you hit the target with either? A shot gun might be better for home defence in some situations. Some times a 380 is a good home defence gun,the Walthers PPK/S or the Sig 230 either are good choices.A Berretta 96 fs is also a good soild gun to consider about a 100.00 more then you want to spend.If you buy a cheap gun it may let you down when you need it.A 45 acp for 400.00 is probily junk! Find a local gun range that rents guns and try a few out,you will find one that fits you just right.Then if you have to save for a while to get a good gun then do so. You will be glad you did. Thanks for the advice. I currently have a Remington 870 for home defense / utility. I will go to the range and test out some handguns. Are .40 rounds quite a bit more expensive that the .45??
What is the stopping power on the 10mm and the 357sig??

Speed is important, but for home protection, I'd pay more attention to the energy...

Check out the Ruger P-90. Several models available. Reliable, built like a tank and a great value that is in your price range. I bought a KP-90DC because it was a great deal and never dreamed it would end up being my all-around favorite .45 handgun. Over 2,000 rounds through it without a hiccup. It is however, not the most suitable handgun for concealed carry. Check out all manufacturers, I think the .45 is ideal for up-close self defense purposes.

Well I guess I'm "old school" I like the .45ACP! IF you look into the history if it's developement, you'd be surprised at what "they" did make and gage it's stopping power. the recoil it there, but REALLY a problem if you don't work with it, and you can get load the reduce the recoil quite a bit. I wouldn't recomend it for most women, but it does what it was designed for VERY WELL!!! I'm surprised that nobody has suggested a Colt Govt. model 70 or 80 (model 70 would be my choice), very simple weapon, well designed and PROVEN!My 2 cents ...Mark
