Remington Mountain Rifle???

Considering getting a Remington Mountain rifle in .280. Need your advice and opinions.

Also, specs says checkered hand rubbed stock but no mention of walnut.

Does anyone know what the stocks are cut from?

  Although i am a Remington fan,i have never owned a mountain rifle.I have heard,because of the lightweight barrel,the accuracy is not on par with the standard mdl. 700's.The wood stocked ones are walnut.If you are not concerned with extreme accuracy,i think one would be fine.

  I have owned two of them. Both were stainless/sny so can't help with stock info. One was a 270 and one was a 280. I hand load and worked up loads that shot MOA (but I bedded and floated both). The light barrel will cause it heat faster, but for 3 shot groups they were both right at MOA.[^]

  Stocks are walnut and usually damn nice also. Great gun and perfect for whitetail. We have sold a ton and never heard a bad word about accuracy. The barrels are light and do heat up but who is shooting these 10-20 times in a row ?

  I have one in .260 rem, nice dark stock. I bought mine for coastal blacktails and long hikes, but I just can't leave it at home it went all over the west with me last fall. I think you will be more than happy with it.

  If light weight is your concern, you might check out their Titanium rifles as well, they weigh ~5.25 pounds.

  the 280 is a fine cal. hard to beat , if you reload try Hornaday 154gr. spire point with 54.5 gr's of IMR 4350 in remington cases gives me 2900 ft/ps average of 10 shot from my Ruger 77v when I first got this rifle 20 years ago we push it up to 3100 ft/ps but the accuracy fell off, the 2900 ft/ps load was the most accurate out of my rifle and has taken many whitetails over the years

  Rockton, the stock on the mountain rifle is made of American walnut unless you get the synthetic stock. Remington also made these with laminate stocks. The 280 is an excellant caliber. I have a Remington 700FS in 280. The accuracy in mine is excellant and it weights a half pound less than the mountain rifle.
