270 vs. 30-06
How do the two compare and which is best all around? All opinions welcome, as well as best guesses. Thanks.

Your question is a good way to start a fight! But here is my 2 cents worth. Depending on what you are shooting at, I like the larger frontal area of the 30-06 bullet on bigger animals like elk or black bear. If you are talking deer, flip a coin and buy which ever.
You can find ammo just about everywhere for either. Please don't start saying the 30-06 is better or that the 270 is better because when you get right down to it it really is a coin flip. Flatter trajectory vs heavier bullet vs faster bullet vs more frontal area. It is really what you want and are comfortable with.
Bottom line and final thought, the cartridge doesn't make much difference with a poorly placed shot with either one of these two time tested and proven cartridges. JM2CW

My hunting buddy swears by his 700 BDL in .270. I hunt with a 742 in '06 and a 700 PSS in .308.
The 270 is impressive at long range open shots.
Flip a coin.
If you really want to reach into the next zip code on Deer sized game 7mm magnum would be a good option choice.
Only you can choose the "best" rifle for your needs.

I agree with 257... Both are very good caliber choices do a comparison - it truely is splitting hairs, the 06 has a slight edge for energy retention, and the 270 should fly a little flatter. That said, I too recommend (like bluewater), if you can handle the recoil, to choose a magnum. If you get a 7mm, .300 win, .300 ultra, or something like that, then you should be able to use it for any big game animal in North America.

I would say 257 nailed it. Both are good calibers, the 06 is more versatile in handeling larger game a bit better. Since the .270 is an 06 necked down to 27 caliber the differences lie in the .270 not being able to shoot bullets quite so heavy as the 06, but shooting the lighter bullets with a little more velocity. Only you can pick the ideal caliber for your own hunting needs and conditions, but it would be hard to go wrong with either. Only you can determine if Rem, Ruger, Browning, Steyr etc. builds the perfect rifle for your needs. Try them on. All of that said, if you are looking for the perfect one-rifle-does-it-all rifle, there is no such thing, but the 06 is a top contender. If I were you I would plan on owning several rifles in different calibers to cover all of your hunting/shooting needs, and maybe a few just 'cause you can't resisit them. That is what happens to most of us, no matter how good our intentions were to start out. 0 -
All around I would go with the 30/06 its suitable for most North American game.And you have alot more bullet weights to choose from.Ive used 110gr to 200gr Bullets and alot in between.

No guess. 270 will hand load from varmits to Elk loads. Shoot flatter and faster. Period. Best all round gun for anybody. 0 -
Depends on what you intend shooting with it. The .30 will take any game in North America including big bears. The .270 will be close but no big bears for it. .30-06 can be loaded with 110 to 220+ grain bullets. 100 to 150's in the .270.
Go here and fool around with the cartridge comparer. Remember to compare like bullets and weights. In the 150 corelokt, the .30-06 is slightly better. Mind you, it still depends on what you're hunting. The beastie won't know the difference.

That said, I give the following advice.
If you are going to be hunting in open country for deer size and smaller game I give the edge to the 270. If you are doing mountain hunting/timber hunting and larger game, elk, I give the edge to the 06. If I owned one I wouldn't sell it to get the other.
Now if you want my suggestion, I personly would recommend a 280, it is more versitle than either the 270 or 06.[:D]

I have to agree that trying to compare these two excellent and proven calibers have started more fights than a jealous husband at a cowboy bar. They are both great calibers and by many are considered the standard that most other calibers are compared to. I have both in Ruger Stainless and can't say I like one better than the other I just like them for different applications. The 270 is a light recoil long range rifle that is most likely one of the best whitetail deer rifle calibers out there. But so is the 30/06 with just a small amount of additional recoil and more bullet selections. Both of these calibers have Taken practically every huntable animal in North America for years. I believe when all other calibers are gone the 30/06 and the 270 will still be around. This is just one mans opinion. 0
