.45 Slide Slop
I recently aquired an el cheapo Auto-Ordnance 1911A1, and it is one of the ones that has a poor fit and finish- I've tightened the slide a little by installing a 18.5Lb. Wolffe recoil spring and firing pin spring, as well as a .125 Shock-buff. What I need now is some more detailed info on pressing the slide to the frame. Do I use heat? Press the slide to the frame while mounted? Just the side? Ect, Ect.
I'd rather do this myself, I'm NOT going to pay a 'smith $100 to do this for me.

Well, I'll answer your question directly, first. I assume that you understand that anything that you do may ruin the gun completely and may even result in injury or death to you.
Lateral play in the slide is reduced by putting the slide only (NOT the entire gun) in a heavy duty vise horizontally with only 1/4" of the slide between the jaws of the vise, and tightening. Try the slide on the frame, and repeat the process until it just barely slides back and forth on the frame.
There are a LOT more things that you will need to learn in order to obtain an accurate, reliable gun. Gunsmiths earn their money, but, if you are determined to do the job yourself, at least buy a good book on pistolsmithing.

Saxon- From the amount of slop it had, it needs to be improved quite a bit, there's no way it'll hit the side of a barn (from the inside). I want the max accuracy out of the thing I can get, which won't be much, (I'll settle for all of the bullets going in the same direction.[:)]).
nmeyers- Actually I do know quite a bit about accurizing a .45- I have never learned how to "squeze" a slide though- Lapping the slide to the frame, changing feed ramp geometry, throating and polishing the Bbl, fitting a new bushing, ect, ect.
Here's the deal guys-
I got this because my father-in-law wanted a .45, but was not willing to shell out any real cash for one. I'm tired of hearing his yap run full bore about wanting the damn thing, and how freakin' expensive they are. I was not about to shell out far more cash than I needed to, not if I was going to get a CETME any time soon. So I get an Auto-Ordnance, online, and as expected, it's sloppy. I am not going to loan the man a sloppy .45, 'cause I'll never hear the end of it. I'm simply loaning this to him, for an extended period of time, when I get it back I'll most likely sell it, and use the funds towards a Series 70. He won't shoot this much, (Maybe never.) but I might later on. If I screw this up by cracking the slide, I'll order a $80.00 replacement from Sarco or whoever and call it good, but in the mean time, I'd like to try and do this at least once.

Slide tightening is not for amateurs. If you have to try, look at Brownell's 1911 tool section(s). They sell lots of tools that will help keep you from pulling your hair out. They have a gizmo that you can use to keep from over-tightening your slide when you clamp it. GO EASY. Good luck! 0 -
If you don't do as ROCKLOBSTER says, at least use wood blocks on each side of your .45 slide when in the vice! I used to tighten the slides up years ago with this method, and it works, be slow and careful.

The whole length of the slide grooves may not be loose. Pinch the loose areas of the slide gently and keep trying the fit. There will be a little springback. Try it a little at a time so as not to over tighten it. If you do, don't use abrasives to grind it loose. 0 -

There was an article written at least thirty years ago on accurizing
a Government .45.
They suggested using a lead hammer to gently tap the slide, checking it often for fit. I did it with mine & I was very satisfied with the result.0 -
Methinks Submariner and gruntled have me headed down the right path for this one- actually pressing the slide may be a last resort effort in this case. I already have a spare Wilson bushing I fitted to the Bbl.

If you're going to use the "vise squeeze" method, see if you can beg, borrow, or steal the use of a 6" machinist's vise (and not a cheap one, either!).
Good machinist's vises have perfectly parallel sides.....and they close perfectly parallel...and that's what you need to get an even "squeeze" on your slide.0
