Drilling - JP Sauer & Sohn

Need info on a Drilling. I'm describing from memory & a phone conversation. The gun is a 16ga SxS over 9.3x72 hammerless. Some markings on the gun were said to be: Erwin Kirchhaff, Krupp Laufstahz, JP Sauer & Sohns, Suhl.

Forgive me if I canibalized the spellings.

Barrels are blue, reciever seemed have been case colored, but faded to silver, wood is good. Overall at least %75, maybe better with some TLC.

Approx age & value?

how do you tell from a $500 to a $5,000 or more value gun?

  The best thing to do is find an apraiser who knows the item in question.It is worth the few bucks spent down the line.You might have to send it to them by common carrier but doubt the seller would stand still for that.Some gun smiths also do it on occasion but you must expect to reward them for their time.Without hands on inspection most won't even venture a guess.If you don't trust the sellers apraisal you might just as well pass.There will be more along the way.Good luck.

  rballi, if you can get your hands on a Blue Book of gun values, they have a good write up on the Drilling along with how to judge their values.

  Drillings are quite collectable. Sauer made many. Without bore condititons, chamber measurements and original finish-not possible to
  critique. Blue Book prices mean ZERO. If possible, post a picture.

  Now, if you had the German WW11 survival drilling in the original case, aka Luftwaffe, you could name your own price. Again, bc, your suggestions are not valid nor worthy of any considerations.

  Asking price/value is $1500. The owner wants to trade me out of some stuff for it. He want's one of my Pythons, a S&W 629 & some cash.

  rballi, Some of the things that add to value are: High qualaity game scene engraving, Horn trigger guard, cartridge trap in stock, originality (if it has claw mount bases for mounting a scope you can forget ever finding one that will fit). Most Sauer & Sohn drillings had basic scroll engraving. 9.3 X 72R cartridges are very expensive and the shotgun barrels are probably for a shorter shell than the 2 3/4 that is common today. I would think $1,500 is a little high unless it has some of the features I mentioned above. As others have said, it is virtually to place a value without seeing the gun.

  Yeah, take it to somebody who actually knows and forget Blue Books.A ny book will be at least a year out of date. It's really important to know who made it if you want answers from here or any forum that are even close. Mind you, I did a quick net search and came up with one site with antique drilling. They want between a grand and 2 grand depending on what and when it was made. And post every marking on it. And considering they want a grand for a Python and a S&W 629 is worth a little over $600 there'd be no cash involved, if it was me.

  There is no model number on the gun, and according to the owner, he shot regular length 16ga shells through it. I don't remember seeing any horn or shell trap on the gun, nor a game scene; just regular scroll type engraving.
