Long Action Refers to Actions that can handle case lenghts up to and including the 30-06 Class carts. Short Action refers to 308 Class lengths. The reason there is differnt types, is because you don't need the extra leangth bolt throw of the Long action to chamber the 308 Class Carts. There is also Mag. Actions, that handle Case lengths that surpass the 30-06 Class ie...375 H&H Mag. lengths. Anyone know if Winchester is going to have a Super Short Action for their new line of SSM 223's and 243'S? quote:

The Browning rifles do have super short actions for these WSSM cartridges.

He Dog, how long you think that will last? Makes more sense to open up the feed rails on the short action and give it the correct bolt face. Seems like a lot of extra tooling for nothing[?] But that's just my way of thinking.........

Yea it's extra tooling, but as long as there is a market for it and someone is willing to pay the extra for the shorter bolt throw..... Demand or a "concieved need" for it..... someone will make it, don't you know.

U.S. Repeating Arms and Browning are owned by the same holding Company as far as I can tell so they develop parallel products based on new ammo such as the short mags and the new WSSM's. The .223 is probably too small for deer in most cases (yeah, I know they can be downed with .22LR, but that doesn't make it a swell idea), but the ballistics should be close to 6mm ppc. As in point blank to about 300 yards. I may take up varminting!

Okay the short actions, are built for the ammunition that has quick burning powder. The long actions are built for the ammo that has slow burning powder. The guns are built to handle the ammunition. Cant change the ammunition, so have to go with what caliber you like. It is all in the case length.
