M 1 Carbine

A friend of mine has a m1 with the following marking we would like to know is this a military issue or a repoduction and who is it made by. it has U S Carbine M1 on the front of the receiver and Natl Ord on the back the serial #is 23791 stamped in front of the rear sight. Thanks Steve

  I recently aquired a Universal M 1 carbine it was in bad shape I have it all back in working order but have a problem.I rebuilt the bolt the new ejector and extractor does not work properly. It pulls the spent cartridge back but just releases it after it clears the chamber before it can eject it out of the receiver. any idea how to repair this problem.

  I would make quite sure the gas port is clear. Violent ejection depends on it. I am not clear on if the case lays on the following cartridges or falls out. Sounds like the extractor may need to be shaved a bit on the inside edge or a stronger spring is called for. If possible, try a different bolt to isolate the problem.

  p3skyking the gas port seems to be clear I rebuilt the bolt with new springs extractor,ejector,firing pin. it fires fire the bolt comes back the case comes back and it just lays there on the next cartridge jamming the bolt. it is like the extractor is releasing to soon.

  45..... Take a close look at the lip on the extractor under a magnifying glass, check the lip where it engages the rim on the case.
  I bought a new IAI carbine and the extractor broke after about 100 rnds.
  I checked and found a piece had chipped off. Enough remained to pull the shell out of the chamber, but then released it. My gun was doing the same thing yours is. You may have just got a defective extractor.
  I got a new "good quality" extractor and it now works great.

  Didn't the Universal have a slightly different method of operation? I mean as far as the way it used the gas?
  
  Shaving the inside lip after comparing it to the old extractor wouldn't hurt, I'd think.

  To all thanks I instaled the old extractor aafter shaving the inside down now it works as advertised. the new extractor was cut wrong on the inside of the extractor. thanks for all the assistence. 45
