winchester model 54 mounts and rings
I want to mount a Leopuld Alaskan to a model 54. I am looking for mounts and rings to do this. The rifle is already drilled and tapped .

The mounts you need are readily available at larger gun shops. If your local dealer doesnt have them,they can order them from Weaver, Redfield, Leopould, Ziess, you name it. Good luck.0 -
Model 54's and pre-war Model 70's were drilled and tapped on the top of the reciever and ONLY on the side of the bridge. If your rifle is drilled and tapped on the top of the bridge it is an after market alteration. If it is most any of the larger companies will have the bases. If it is not drilled and tapped then look for a Stith mount for a Model 54 or early 70. They use the factory rear mounting holes and a dovetail for the barrel sight boss. I have several that I bought on this auction site and another that shall remain nameless.

Has your bolt handle been altered to accomodate a scope? I hope not as it would seriously devalue your rifle. As the prior poster said, only the front receiver ring and the left side, rear of the receiver were factory tapped. Anything else is after market. If it has, than most but not all Win. Mod. 70 bases can be made to work. This is what I did to mount a scope on my Mod 54 in .30 WCF (.30-30) without drilling holes, cutting wood or altering the bolt handle:
-Get a set of Weaver bases for the Mod. 70 / 54. I think they are #46 front and #48 rear and a set of Weaver "see through" rings. They are high enough to clear the bolt handle if the eye piece of your scope is not too large. Mount your front base normaly in the two tapped holes, install the front ring and use it to hold the scope in place and adjust the eye relief.
-Install the rear ring and attach the base. There is nothing to screw it to but get it centered over the rear receiver bridge where it looks right. Tighten everthing up.
-Clean the top of the receiver bridge and the underside of the rear base with denatured alcohol. Use a good two part epoxy under the rear base, remount the scope and let sit a day or two.
This has worked well for me for the past 30 years but I think these high rings look like hell. The only alternative to mount a scope on this classic rifle is to alter it.0 -
The 54 I have has not been altered. We have Bausch/Lomb mounts but do not have rings. I assume I will need Bausch/Lomb rings to work with this mount. 0
