M1917 BAYONET

I picked up a bayonet today in a scabbard. One side of the scabbard is stamped at the top US M1917 and underneath that B.A. INC. On the other side of the scabbard thier is a square with a eagle inside with three stars above the eagle.On the blade at the base on one side is a flaming bomb and US and above and to the left of US the number 15 in small numbers. On the other side of the blade a small circle with remington written in a circle inside it, and 1917 stamped above it. Overall lenght is 22 inches with the blade lenght at 17 inches. Whatimpress me is the condtion the blade is in very good to excllent condtion with almost all of the gray pakerized finish on it. Only wear marks is were it has been pulled in and out of the scabbard.The scabbard is in great shape also with all of green finish on it.Also has the wire loop on it for the belt. Obiviousley this was for the 03 springfield,what is it worth in this condtion and could someone give me a little more info on this piece. Thankyou Beltfed

Actually, I think it does not fit the 03, but rather, the US Enfield (P17) and the Winchester Model 97 Trench Shotgun. This can be confirmed by two vertical indentations in the wooden grips running from top to bottom. The Springfield takes the 1905 bayo. 0 -
The Skyking is on top of this one with the ID of the bayonet as an Enfield and not for an 03 Springfield. At the start of the US involvement in WWI it was decided to unitilize the Enfield bayonet since there were actually moer Enfields in service than 03's and the number of Enfield bayonets on hand and projected for production was far greater than those intended for the 03 Springfield. There were around 1 million 1917 bayonets manufactured: Remington made 545,000 and Winchester made up the remainder. The first blades were left bright, then blued, but the vast majority were parkerized. Your scabbard does not have the correct markings for a WWI or WWII issue. Is it leather or plastic? The boxed eagle under the three statrs is the DoD property stamping that replaced the old ordnance flamming bomb in the early 1950's. It is possible that the blade was reparkerized and then reissued with a new scabbard. There are PLENTY of military trench-shotgun owners who'd gladly take that bayonet and scabbard off of your hands. If you put it up for auction I'd bet you'd be amazed at the price it will bring.

THankyou for the info. It does have the two verticle indentations in the grip running top to bottom. The scabbard is all metal, a magnet sticks to it. Thier is a number under the eagle 11418. Does this shed any more light on ths subiject,thankyou beltfed0 -
You have a rebuilt 1917 blade in a Vietnam Era scabbard.
Original bayonets for the U.S. Model 1917 Enfield and Trench Gun
were natural finished steel with a blued quench mark just below the
cross guard. Originally not parkerized. The scabbard for the Vietnam
issued blades would have a steel throat and a plastic scabbard.
Original scabbards for the Enfields were green painted leather with
throats and tips of steel.0 -
The two grooves in the walnut grips should be horizontal vs vertical.
The Vietnam Era U.S. M 1917 scabbard would be steel throat with phenolic sheath. Marked at top: U.S.-M1917
B.A. INC.
Reverse would be the boxed Eagle and Stars which are the U.S. Property Marking or DoD as Mark mentioned.0 -
Mark Christian has it right. I looked long and hard for an original 1917 Bayonet for my original WWI Winchester 1897 Trench gun. While the bayonets themselves are worth between $100-$150 in very good to excellent original condition....the original leather scabbards(especially with original green paint) bring as much as the bayonets themselves. While your scabbard doesn't lend much to the price the bayonet is desirable. Beach 0 -
