S & W Mod. 48 (22 mag pistol)

I am interested in purchasing a Smith & Wesson Model 48 pistol. Does anyone have any information about this pistol or have first hand experience pertaining to this 22 mag?
Any information would be appreciated.

    A well made pistol, but with very limited usefulness.

    The .22 mag is essentially a rifle cartridge; the slow burning powder requires a long barrel. When fired in a pistol, much of the powder is blown out the front end. So, muzzle velocity & energy is not a lot greater than a .22 LR.

    And, you can't shoot any other cartridge in the gun, other than the equally expensive WRF.

    Sometimes you can find the M48 with a FITTED 22lr cylinder this
    makes the revolver very useful,although purists will explain that
    the 22mag has a .0001 LARGER bore diameter then a 22 lr barrel so
    in THEORY the Lrs may not be as accurate---I tried this about 20
    years ago and I got superb accuracy with both the regular and the
    mag with the 8-3/8" barrel.If I could find one today I would buy it.

    Please just don't listen to one opinion. There is always someone who likes or dislikes anything.

    First of all, why are you interested? First gun? Add to collection? Hunting? Plinking? Available?

    Alot of times people don't go specifically looking for a particular gun. I would bet that your friend, relative or pawnshop has one and you want to get talked into it. Depending on condition, the gun can be worth anything from $150 to $450.

    If you want it for plinking, you are better off with 22lr. If you want it for small game hunting, you are OK out to about 20yds. If you want a gun and are recoil sensitive to 38 or 357, 22Mag ammo costs the same as cheap 38's.

    If you want it because you already have a Mod 17 & 18, etc. Just get it if the price is right.

    Do you need it? No, not really. Nobody really needs anything. The question is...Do you want it? Here, let me twist your arm.....

    Thanks to all who responded to my question, especially rballi. I saw the S&W model 48 for sale here in the auction listings. Do I really need it?.....no, but it looked so good I thought I would add it to my limited gun collection. I have a S&W model 41 and model 52 and enjoy shooting both those pistols. Like anything else, once you get the bug to expand your collection it's hard to stop the impluse unless you listen to some good advice. Once again thanks for the input....but, if I find one that is reasonable in price, I might just buy it.

    I retract all my other comments.

    If you already have a 41 & 52, you already have the oddball bug. The 41 & 52 are specialized target guns, especially the 52. A Mod 48 will fit right in with "I don't really need it, but..."

    Just a warning. Smith & Wessonitis is almost incureable!

    I too was in the same situation that you are, but that was in 1998. I was told by numerous people that this gun was not a very accurate shooter and that it was expensive to shoot. I ran it through my mind many times as to whether or not I should buy this gun. I decided to pass on it. This only led to many hours of second guessing myself. After two weeks of this misery I went back and purchased it. I paid 375.00 for it. I cannot vouch for the accuracy of this handsome revolver but it is a well balanced piece with a decent trigger. I have never shot it, as I prefer larger caliber handguns. I guess I purchased it because I thought it was unique. I have never seen one before, but I am sure there are thousands out there to be had. It is a stainless, 6 inch version that has spent its whole life in the safe other than the times it take it out to clean it or admire it, or show it off. I totally agree with rballi. He hit the nail right on the head. I certainly did not need the 648 , but I also have never, ever regretted buying this gun. If you can afford it go for it and never look back.

    Ive got 2, a 4" and a 6". These are great guns. Both are very accurate, and pleasant to shoot. The 6" shoots better, but the 4" carries better. They are excellant small game guns, i"ve killed many badgers with my 22Mag, and they are one tough animal to put down. Yes, ammo is more then 22LR, BUT for hunting or self defense, it is well worth it.
