94 Winchester Rifle 25-35 VALUE ??
I am looking for a value on this rifle:
Winchester, Model 1894 Rifle, 26" Octagon Barrel, Caliber 23-35 Win. (The rarest caliber), Special ordered butt stock with a trap door. Butt stock has been repaired, it had a new piece of wood on the bottom from the lower tang to about a 1/2" thick at the butt. It's very well done. Bore is a little hazey but good and sharp. I put a Tang sight on it and it shot under 2 1/2" at 100 yards. I am a high power shooter and have been to Camp Perry seven times. The serial number 8252XX which puts it in 1918. Finish is around 80+% general condition is same or better.

I'd have to say between $1000.00 and $1200.00, because of the Stock Repair, and Finish..It is not what I'd call the best....Its a Nice looking Gun and will/would make a Nice Filler in a Collection....The caliber 25-35 being disirable won't make this Gun worth anymore...This is My Personal Opinion.........Respectfully.......

The CAPTAIN is right. If the serial number had been earlier(below about 148000) it would have been worth a bit more also. 0 -
One of the things that bothers me about this rifle is the butt stock and I don't mean the repair. The butt stock appears to be off a 1873 carbine and that would make it incorrect for a model 1894 rifle. All the 1873 rifles and carbines had that type of trap in the butt plate. But searching through 'The Winchester Book' by George Madis, I can't find any reference to this butt plate being used on the model 1894, not even as a special order piece and this makes me a little suspicious. While it is not that unusual to see rifle butt plates on carbines, I don't think that I have ever seen a carbine butt plate on a rifle with the exception of the musket. If this is indeed a special order rifle, pull the butt stock off and there should be a number stamped on the left side of the tang. Only a factory letter would tell if this is a special ordered butt stock and therefore original to the rifle. Just my two cents worth. Scout 0 -

Ok you got me wondering I went and got out my 1873 Winchester Rifle which is a Special Order Gun. Serial No. 132654A. On the left side of the lower tang is the Number 847 then a space and the letter R. The top of the stock under the upper tang also has 847 stamped into it, along with 38 which is the caliber. I do have a letter from Winchester for this one. I compared the two stocks the 73 is 1 1/2" shorter, and the hole in the butt plate is 5/8" dia. and 8" deep. In the 94 the hole is close to 13/16" dia. and the hole is 8 1/2" deep. Also the lower tang on a 73 is much longer then the top one. Both Rifles have 26" barrels. So what do I have now???

You have posed an intrusting question and one to which I don't have a ready answer. Your Model 1873 is indeed a special order rifle as the numbers and letter that I spoke about are in the right places. However, you didn't say what you found under the wood of the '94. As we all know there was a time when American gun companies would make up just about anything that you wanted as long as you were willing to pay for it. I think that your Model 1894 is a good candidate for a factory letter just to see what was going on and would add to the resale value of the rifle. Let us know if you find out any thing else, as Iam sure the other Winchester collectors on the forum would be interested as well. All the best,Scout0 -

Sorry missed that part. There is not a number on the 94 just the 73.
How do you go about getting a letter on a Wichester these days? The letter I have on the 73 was from T. E. Hall, Curator dated Oct 1 1971.
This is what it says: (Dear Mr. Stumpf The Winchester Model 1873 serial number records list number 132654A as a Rifle, Caliber 38, 26" octagon barrel and set trigger. It was shipped October 18, 1883, no other information or description listed.)
I Guess I had the year wrong I thought it was 82.
Top is the 73, next is a 92 that came off a ranch in Colorado I found a brand new original 32-20 carbine barrel and put it on it. It looks rough but it's a tack driver with that new barrel. And last is a copy of a 92 Stainless Steel, 44 Rem Mag, 16" barrel and It is Serial Number 1.0
