remington 8 or 81

Did remington make a model 8 in 300 savage???? And how can I tell the model 8 from a model 81?

  A big collector of Rem8s in Oregon had a Model 8 in .300 Savage for sale in 1997. The original gun was made in 1923 and the gun had codes for factory repairs in November 1930 (RY3), April 1949 (UU3), July 1966 (ON3) and September 1966 (DN3). Remington began to offer the .300 Savage in the Remington Model 81 in 1940. Either in '49 or '66 the gun was factory modified to .300 Savage. The barrel sleeve was factory serial numbered to the rest of the gun but was in "almost new" condition compaired to the rest of the gun. I saw a very early Model 8 in just horrible conditon at a gun show in Lubbock years ago which was originally in .35 Remington. It had the very early engraved "35 Rem" on top of the barrel jacket, but the gun was a .300 Savage and had that caliber designation on the barrel extension (where you usually find the caliber marking).
  Remington Model 8s have a "schnable" forend. Remington Model 81s have a thicker "beavertail" forend. All Remington Model 81s have a "pistol grip". Most Model 8s have a "straight grip", though you could get a pistol grip on special order. Most Model 81s are marked on the left side of the receiver, "The Woodsmaster" and under it "Model 81". Look on the left side of the barrel up where it joins the receiver to find the two or three letter production code. This gives you the month and year your gun was made. Go to the Remington website to get the key to the code.
