What other kind of bullet can be used in place of a 7.62 x 54R mosin nagant round and same question but for a 6.5 x 55

Like KJ, I'm not sure exactly what you want to know, but will try to take a stab at it.
You must use the same diameter projectile as the original (nominally .308 & .264 respectively) loaded in the exact same cases.
Or: the bullet weights can be altered, type of bullet may be changed - SP, HP, FMJ.
*BUT* you cannot change the bullet diameter or use a different cartridge.
The phrasing of your question suggests you are not particularly conversant with these issues. No biggie, we all started somewhere. But strongly - very strongly - suggest you stick with factory ammo at this point in your program.0 -
Use only the ammunition that matches the markings of the firearm. If you are unsure of the caliber, consult a gunsmith.

With all due respect to ICONOCLAST, the 7.62 X 54R (Russian) uses a .310 bullet! I'm sure you could get away with .308, but you may lose some accuracy.

The origional spec. for the 7.62x54R calls for a .308 bullet.
Even if the barrel is oversize (not unusual as I have one here with a .316 bore) the chamber neck area may not allow the usage of larger diameter bullets (neck won't expand enough to release the bullet cleanly). A chamber cast is required inorder to determine if non-spec ammo will be safe.
You have to remember that the bore and the chamber reamer both have tolerances (you can get a tight bore and a loose chamber or a tight chamber with a loose bore).
Granted the MN design is a very strong action and can probably handle the over pressure, I've seen a number of pearced primers on factory loads in it.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -

As far as so much powder, I too wonder. If you are out to shoot an elephant, OK, but I (try to) put holes in paper.
I worry about those in our fraternity who insist on "magnumizing" anything they shoot. Why not just go to a bigger case??
