Brass Shavings

Hi,
I was at the local range today and was trying out a S&W 442 38spl revolver. I got nicked about 4 times on the hand and face due to brass shavings. Is this usual? I have two revolvers and not had this happen before, the ammunition was from PMC (not reloads). Just curious to see if I have been lucky in the past or this was not normal.

  Are you shooting coper jacketed bullets?? If so the shavings are most likely from the copper jacket..It dosen't reall matter what the shavings are actually...DON"T SHOOT IT AGAIN UNTIL YOU HAVE IT CHECKED BY A COMPETENT GUNSMITH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! something is out of line or out of time.... No revolver especially a U.S. made brand name should throw stuff back at you.... Be real careful..Hope you were wearing eye protection..

  Thanks Jim,
  This is what I thought! It was a gun I had rented at the range and just a box of regular ammunition I had purchased from them. I have a S&W already and never had this happen. Yes I was wearing eye protection, can't be too safe right. By the way, I let them know the problem but the guy behind the counter didn't seem to think it was a problem.

  More likely to be hot bits of powder than either brass or lead. Bring it to the attention of the range owner just the same.

  Hi Sunray,
  It was bits of copper I believe as I had one stick in my finger
  and another cut my cheek slightly. After reading Jims reply I checked and found that the ammunition was copper jacketed so I am assuming it was copper shavings and not brass. As I say I let the guys at the range know. Thanks again.

  Sounds like a gun that has been
  used a lot.Couple of worn parts,
  like the "hand" that revolves
  the cylinder..it isn`t revolving
  to the left quite far enough to
  line up perfectly with the barrel`s
  breach..therefore it is shaving
  bullet material to the right,and
  into your right hand,and right side
  of your face...if you are right
  handed.
