skeet chokes?
con anyone tell me what is the true inside measurement of a 12ga. factory choked skeet gun? I have a number of o/u all skeet choked but no two guns mike the same they all fall between .710 to .722. my browning is the only one that both bbls. mike at .710..

A skeet choke, is not a size. A skeet choke, is a constriction. The difference between bore size, and choke size, is your constriction. You have # 1 skeet and #2 skeet. If you have a difference of .005 thousands, you have a #1 skeet. If you have a difference of .007 thousands, you have a # 2 skeet.
The reason there is not one size given for a choke, is that barrels very, in relation to bore size. If you have a barrel, that is back bored, you can have a skeet choke that is .030 thousands larger than, a (standard) barrel.
The best way to check constriction, is with a dial bore gage. You push the gage all the way in, set the dial to O, and read the constriction, as you pull it through the choke.

"Some shotgunners believe the amount of choke in a barrel can be determined by simply measuring its inside diameter at the muzzle, but this has never been true (and it never will be true unless all manufacturers decide to get together and start making barrels of the same gauge with a common bore diameter). The amount of choke constriction in a barrel is the difference between its bore diameter and the constriction at its muzzle; the best way to measure both is with a special dial caliper (available from Brownells, Dept. ST, 200 S. Front St., Montezuma, IA 50171). Bore diameter can vary considerably among the various manufacturers, and the same holds true for muzzle constriction for a given choke designation. Taking the 12 gauge as an example, while standard bore diameter is supposed to be in the neighborhood of .729 to .730 inch, barrels from various makers can range anywhere from .720 to .735 inch, and those that have been backbored can be even larger. Assuming that the correct amount of constriction for, say, Full choke for the 12 gauge is .040 inch, it is easy to see how actual inside diameter at the muzzle can vary from .680 to .695 inch for that designation."

Patterns are normally expressed with a name such as improved cylinder or as a percentage such as 50%. The patterns are always assumed to be measured at a distance of 40 yards. The exceptions to this are cylinder bore and skeet 1 chokes in all gauges and .410 bore shotguns in all choke sizes. These are measured at a distance of 25 yards. "The above chart is based on using premium field loads with #8 shot. Generally the larger size of shot you use the less degree of choke is needed to get an equivalent size pattern. High velocity or magnum loads normally do not pattern as well as lighter loads. The same load by different ammunition manufacturers may not pattern the same. As you can see, there are many things that can cause a shotgun to shoot a different pattern with the same choke constriction. Most chokes will shoot a pattern reasonably close to the marked size, but the only way to be absolutely sure of what your gun is doing is to "pattern" it. Use the loads you plan to shoot and try different chokes to get the pattern you want."0
