I have a Russian SKS, dated 1954,7.62x39. Very good condition looks like new. about what would it be worth. Thanks in advance.

Probably 4-8" groups depending on the rifle and ammo. 223 probably will get a better group. I've consistently hit a 12" gong @ 300yds with my Romanian, but I have some Norincos that won't group well past 100yds. 0 -
My father-in-law has a factory SKS with a synthetic stock installed and using raised-scopemounts he has got a deer every year with it. He limits all of his shots to 100 yards (regardless of the rifle). I have shot his and I'd probably shoot a deer with it out to 150 MAYBE 200 yards, but would probably try some ammo besides bulk softpoints.
Not exactly sure of his grouping, but a paper plate is dead every time for me to 150 yards (yeah, not exactly the most accurate thing I've shot)

You might as well ask how high will the Dow go this year; it depends upon whom you ask. I own several SK's, and I can hit whatever I aim at within each rifle's range. The Norincos were inexpensive when I got 4 of them(still have 3), and they're generally good(3" or less)out to 400 yds with the 12X scopes. My 2 Russian/Romanians are better made and consequently hold 3" out to 550yds with Wolf ammo. The VC doesn't shoot worth a damn due to the owner falling across the barrel after he was convinced he didn't need it anymore. Both Yugos are crap, too. No better than 3" at 100! I'm not going to waste the time bedding the Yugos or the Norincos like I did the Russkys; they'll just have to appreciate in their original conditions.

My romanian was good for two inches at 350yd . and that was with chaep ammo . it deapends alot on the gun and the shooter

I find these "new" SKS shoot better after having at least 500rds go through them. I found this to be true with my Norinco which I admire alot. Also if you're tall like me you may want to add a recoil cuff to the stock to make it longer. As far a 200yd accuracy, it's been a while since I shot at that distance but with mine I was consistantly knocking 12ga empty shells off a log at 75yds.

Sir, I owned and shot SKS's going back years, never had any thing but average accuracy from them. Three to four inches at 100 yards with open sights, was the best i could ever do.
You seem to have much better results. Three inches at 550 yards with Wolf ammo is fantastic!
Granted your useing a 12 power scope, but what else do you do to the rifle to get those kind of groups, just got to know?0 -
3" at 550 yds with an SKS huh? I wonder what some of the folks over on General Discussion would have to say about this. The $10,000 PSG1 is capable of that but an SKS? I try not to doubt those i dont know but whatever Davey Crockett. 0 -
A few posts here smell really bad. The SKS was not intented to be a sniper rifle. The best I have ever seen at the range or gotten with my two rifles is around 1.5-3" at 100 and a dinner plate at 200 yd.
Anything farther out sounds like a tall tale. Besides, at those ranges the terminal ballistics are close to throwing a marble at some one. Just my humble opinion.

I have heard some tall tales about groups but a couple of these are
the tallest yet. 1/2 and 3/4 minutes of angle? I dont care whether it was even specially handloaded to a slugged bore, scope or not,
it aint possible. Even with no wind and 10 sighting shots. Face reality. 1 1/2 to 3 minutes of angle I will believe. Even a sub-
minute of angle rifle needs special pampering. And a SKS aint one
in any way shape or form.0 -
Okay then, since my veracity has been called into question; on the Russky SK's, I have polished the gas port on the inside of the barrel with valve lapping compound & JB bore paste from both ends to remove burrs-then I carefully seat the action in the original stock with acra-glas and strips of kevlar fabric from a HWMVMW anti-shrapnel blanket for added rigidity-then I break in the barrels like anyone else-fire 2, clean; fire 3, clean with bore paste; fire 5, clean with sweets. I average 25 shots in 4 hours while breaking in a barrel.
As far as scopes- my favorite rig mounts an NRA edition Leupold 3-9X40 VXll with duplex reticle. The 500 yarder is equipped with a Simmons Whitetail 6-24X40 with a special mil-dot/target reticle in Millet rings on a homemade base welded to the receiver cover.
The way they're set up; ANYBODY with a steady hold and good technique can hit a 1lb. coffee can at 500!
So, the short answer is that I bed the actions, CLEAN the burrs out of the barrel, attach good optics on a solid base, and call my shots.

Heck, I only paid $150 for my Norinco in unissued condition, and I buy the $80 per 1000 round ammo, I feel real good hitting the 2'x2' steel plate at the range at 350 yards. I didn't buy the gun for the accuracy, but because they are a blast to go shoot. 0
