I know, I know, call Colt.

Colt is closed right now and I was wondering if off the top of anyones head they knew the approx date range of a Python with a SN range K72000?

How can you tell if it's factory Nickel?

  Gun was manufactured in 1981, according to the serial number. Factory Nickel(Bright Polished), was discontinued in 1985. However, the Satin Nickel Finish, (Electroless nickel, called "Royal Coltguard" or "E-NICK"), was a "NEW" finish that came out in 1981.
  
  Because Factory Polished Nickel was relatively common, it wouldn't be necessary for anyone to "re-finish" a blue gun to nickel. But, if the finish on a gun needed to be re-done, someone might have had it re-finished in bright nickel. This is generally easy to determine as the sides of the revolver will be "wavy" and the sharp corners of the metal will be "rounded" and the roll mark lettering will lack the look of sharpness and may even be diminished in depth. In most cases, this will let you know immediately from the look of the finish that the gun has been re-finished. These listed things are the effect found after "polishing away the old finish and imperfections." Very hard to miss these defects on a re-finished gun. Chances are good that if your gun shows none of this type of defect, it is more than likely a "factory finish." Hope this helps a little.
