Has anyone ever heard of cleaning bores with mercury??

I have, in fact heard of it. I'm not sure why it would work; Mercury is fairly unreactive and the only thing I know it reacts with is salt to mess up a bore in the case of corrosvie primers. Not to mention it is rather nasty for your health, moreso than lead. And it is hard to find. Still, should you try it, wear thick rubber gloves. And let us know how it works.

Mercury will remove lead fouling, by amalgamating with the lead and then removed. But mercury is toxic as heck, and no one in his right mind would do this these days. And if you did, the mercury would cause enough brain damage that you wouldn't be in your right mind for long. Nowdays, we use nitrated organic solvents to complex, not amalgamate metal fouling. While flammible as can be, these solvents are nowhere near as toxic as mercury, and what's more, aren't near as persistant a toxin, either.
Just use a commercial bore cleaner.

In the good old days,before the invention of dirt, nearly all competitive pistol shooters use to clean the lead out of their pistols useing mercury. We would put a cork in the chamber end and fill the barrel with mercury and let it sit for an hour, then dump the mercury back into the bottle and clean the bore as normal with Hoppes No.9. I don't think that any of us were harmed by it and none of our childern were born with two heads. I think that I still have 6 or 8 pounds of it around here somewhere. We would get together and by a 76 pound flask of it and then split it up. But as has been said, there are now better things to clean the bore with then mercury and I haven't used it in a long time. We also use to mix up our own bore cleaner to clean our rifles because we couldn't get any bore cleaner. See all the fun that you youngsters missed! 0 -

Yeah, mercury's dissolving of lead is the major downside to putting a drop or two into the hollow point of a .45 bullet and sealing with a bit of lacquer for spectacular added effects. Mind you, the lacquer in first then the mercury and sealed with more lacquer might work. While mercury is toxic, just like lead, it takes a long time before you start turning colours etc. However, you'd get yelled at by nearly everyone for messing about with toxic metals. It's not worth the bother. 0 -
