I checked the CA DOJ's website (http://caag.state.ca.us/firearms/) regarding this weapon. It's not prohibited by name, nor do the characteristics of this weapon make it an illegal "assault weapon". So it would appear legal. However, most semi-auto rifles seem to make their way onto California's illegal "assault weapons" list sooner or later. So if you want one, better buy one while it's still legal.

I suggest asking Mr. Mark Christian-our legal expert. I am sure that he is quite frankly "tired" of the same questions but he will probably give it a "shot". I am also licensed in California but rely upon Mr. Mark Christian for legal clarifications. The DOJ site will
change per hour thus nothing should be set in stone. Good luck. 101

SilverBox, I'd never even heard of this rifle before this very momment. I have to agree with Wild Bill and say that it would appear to be perfectly legal- for the time being. If the AG determines that it is even remotely related to any banned assault weapon it days are numbered. What few people understand is that there is an entire network of anti-gun types who are actively searching the web for firearms which they believe are or should be considered assault weapons. This dates back as far as the first ban back in 1989 when a number of gun banners were shocked to see that there were still rifles like Bushmaster being sold when the AR-15 had been banned or MAK-90's when there should be no AK's. They made their voices heard in Sacramento about violating the "spirit" of the law. This is the major reason we have the two most recent bans. If you want one of these Kel-Tecs and find one for sale I'd suggest you jump on it.

They are not for sale yet. I think there slated to go on sale in May or June. I plan to buy one then.

I asked this same question about two weeks ago. The SU16 I was told was in the same class as a Ruger Mini-14. If the Mini is legal the SU16 should be also. It works with AR15 mags and has storage in the stock. The Kel-Tec web site says it will be available in May 03. I didn't get a chance to buy an AR so the SU16 would fit the bill to protect my family in these challenging times of terrorist activity. The Law that outlaws semi-auto weapons of any type is against the LAW of the land. John

I might not always tell you the truth, but I will never lie to you!

I know firearms consultant.. I'm pretty sure I'm the one who said it was in the same class as Mini-14 :). Mainly I posted this up to see what Mark's response would be. He has a better handle on the gun laws then about anyone I know. I can read the awguide .pdf and make my interpretation, but Mark is in this business. I'm just a guy who likes guns and likes to live in rural Cali.

Lets hope that Kel-Tec has a better record of binging out new items than Armalite has. I have been waith almost 2 years for the AR 180B and finally got tired of waiting and cannelled my order. I like the concept of the SUR-16. If it hits the market I will buy One.
